The western edge of San Francisco does not have a music venue in the conventional sense — no box office, no advance tickets, no touring schedule. What it has instead is three or four bars that put people on in a corner, most nights for nothing, and a weekly open mic that has been running long enough to have become an institution. If your idea of live music involves buying a ticket in advance, this neighbourhood will look empty. If it involves walking into a warm room on a cold night and finding something on, it is one of the better parts of the city.
None of this is ticketed and almost none of it is listed, which means the only real question is what is happening tonight. Tell Karpo the night and it will tell you which room has something on.
The Riptide
The Riptide at 3639 Taraval Street is the anchor and describes itself, fairly, as the best little honky-tonk by the beach. It is open 365 days a year, it never charges a cover, and it runs a long-running, award-winning weekly open mic that is the single most reliable live music event out here.
An open mic that has run for years is a different thing from an open mic in general. The regulars are genuinely good, the room knows how to listen, and the standard is much higher than the format usually implies. It is also, being a beach bar in the fog belt, warm in a way that matters — a great deal of the appeal of the Riptide is that it is the opposite of the weather outside it.
Flanahan's Pub
Flanahan's Pub on Noriega Street runs live music and open mic nights as mainstays, plus a trivia night on the first Thursday of each month. The nonprofit radio station KXSF-LP has been involved in hosting there, which is a good indication of the register — community-run rather than promoter-run, and programmed by people who live nearby.
Noriega is the quieter of the neighbourhood's commercial strips, which makes this the more local of the two rooms. On a weeknight it is largely people from the surrounding avenues, which is either exactly what you want or not what you came for, depending.
Woods Outbound
Woods Outbound at 4045 Judah Street is a narrow bar a few blocks from the beach serving Woods beers alongside a list of wines, plus empanadas. It is not primarily a music room, but it belongs on this list because it is the third point of the triangle — the place you end up between the other two, and where a night out here is actually assembled.
Outerlands at 4001 Judah Street, next door in practical terms, does rotating craft cocktails with seasonal ingredients, which makes that short stretch of Judah the closest thing the Outer Sunset has to a strip you can move along on foot.
How a night out here actually works
It is not a hopping circuit — the rooms are too far apart and the wind off the ocean is genuinely unpleasant, so plan to pick one and stay rather than to move between three. Judah and Noriega are a few blocks apart, which is a longer and colder walk than the map suggests. And because none of this is ticketed, the risk is not that it sells out but that nothing is on: checking the night before you drive out is the whole of the planning required.
The compensation is that it costs nothing. There is no cover at the Riptide, the open mics are free, and an entire evening of live music out here can come to the price of the drinks — which is a rarer thing in San Francisco every year.
