Nobody plans a night out in the Inner Richmond for the music, which is precisely why the music here is worth knowing about. The neighbourhood is a dense residential grid out past Arguello, its commercial life runs along Clement Street and Geary Boulevard, and its two long-running music rooms sit among restaurants rather than in a nightlife district — no queue, no cover in many cases, and an audience that walked there.

The Irish room
The Plough and the Stars on Clement Street has been running traditional Irish music sessions for decades and is the neighbourhood's anchor for live music. The format is not a concert: musicians sit in a circle, the audience drinks around them, and the session builds over the evening. It is free or close to it, it happens on a regular weekly schedule, and it is one of the few genuinely uncommercial live music experiences left in central San Francisco.
Go early if you want a seat near the players, later if you want the room at full volume. Either way, do not talk over the musicians — the etiquette is real and the regulars will enforce it.
The back-room venue
Neck of the Woods on Clement Street is the neighbourhood's proper small venue — a multi-level room with a stage, running booked shows and club nights across a wide range of genres. It is the place local and touring bands play when they are not big enough for the Independent or the Chapel, which means the line-up is genuinely unpredictable and the ticket prices are low.
The practical advice for this room is to check the listing rather than the venue: the same building on two consecutive nights can be a metal show and a soul night, and the crowd changes completely with it.
Eating around it
This is the Inner Richmond's real advantage over a nightlife district. Clement Street between Arguello and about 12th Avenue is one of the best eating streets in San Francisco — Chinese, Burmese, Vietnamese, Thai, Russian bakeries, dim sum, and a run of bars — and most of it is open at the hours you would want before a show. Eating well before live music, within two blocks, is not something the Mission or SoMa reliably offer.
Green Apple Books, one of the city's best bookshops, is on the same stretch and stays open late enough to fill the gap between dinner and doors.
Getting there and back
The 38 Geary runs from downtown along Geary Boulevard one block south and is the main artery; the 2 Clement runs the length of the street itself; the 44 crosses towards the park and the Sunset. Late at night the 38 continues to run on its Owl service, which makes this neighbourhood considerably easier to leave after midnight than its distance from downtown suggests. Street parking is metered on Clement and generally available on the residential blocks either side.
