Frogtown — Elysian Valley on maps — is a narrow strip of warehouses and houses squeezed between the Los Angeles River and the 5 freeway, with no through traffic and almost no commercial frontage. It is not a nightlife neighbourhood and it never will be. What it has is one properly programmed music room in a converted industrial building, and an evening built around that room has to account for the fact that there is nothing else within walking distance to fall back on.
There is one room and no plan B within walking distance, so the eating and the parking have to be settled before you arrive. Tell Karpo what show you are going to.
The room
Zebulon on Fletcher Drive, at the Frogtown and Atwater edge, is a bar, restaurant and music venue in one large warehouse space. Its booking is unusually wide — jazz, experimental, Latin American, African, indie and DJ nights across the same month — and it is the kind of listing where the sensible approach is to trust the venue rather than to recognise the name on the bill. The room itself is high-ceilinged, dark and better sounding than the building suggests.
It serves food and drinks, which matters enormously given the surroundings, and the outdoor area is a genuine asset on a warm night. Getting there for doors rather than for the headliner is worth doing here, because the early part of the evening in the bar is a large part of what the place is.
Eating first, because you will have to
Frogtown's restaurants are strung along the strip rather than clustered, and they are small operations with early closes: Wax Paper on Knox Avenue for sandwiches, Lingua Franca along the river for a proper dinner, Salazar for mesquite-grilled Mexican in a warehouse yard, and Frogtown Brewery for beer. Atwater Village's Glendale Boulevard strip is five minutes away by car and has more options open later.
The mistake to avoid is assuming you can improvise. At nine on a weeknight, in this neighbourhood, the choice narrows to whatever the venue itself is serving.
The river, before dark
The Los Angeles River bike path runs the length of Elysian Valley and is the neighbourhood's actual main street. The soft-bottom stretch here is one of the few sections of the river that is not fully concrete, with vegetation, herons and, in season, kayaking through the Elysian Valley recreation zone. Arriving early enough to walk or ride part of it before a show is the version of this evening that people who live here would recommend.
Spoke Bicycle Cafe sits on the path and is both a bike shop and a café, which tells you everything about how this neighbourhood is meant to be moved through.
Parking and getting home
Frogtown's streets are narrow and partly residential, and the venue's own parking is limited. The realistic options are arriving early enough to park on the street a few minutes' walk away, or using a rideshare — which is also the sensible choice given that the evening involves a bar. Public transit to this specific pocket is thin; this is a driving or rideshare neighbourhood, and the 5 and 2 freeways both run alongside it.
