Wynwood has spent a decade turning into a district of murals, galleries and expensive cocktails, and Gramps is the thing that was there before most of it and did not change. It opened in 2012, it holds around a hundred people, it has a pizza window attached, and it is the best small live music room in Miami for reasons that have nothing to do with the sound system.
Shows are at the weekend, the happy hour is on weekdays, and the two almost never overlap — which means the night you turn up decides what this place is. Ask Karpo what is on here tonight.
What kind of night you get depends on the day
Most of the shows happen at the weekend. Friday and Saturday are when the bookings land — local bands, touring acts on the small circuit, DJs in the back.
Weeknights are a different bar. Monday through Friday there is a happy hour from 4pm to 8pm with discounted drinks, and the programming runs to trivia, karaoke and a rotating cast of smaller events rather than ticketed shows.
Notably, the happy hour does not run on Saturday or Sunday. So the cheap hours and the show nights are on opposite ends of the week, and which of those you want should determine when you go.
The room, and why the size matters
A hundred-capacity room is small enough that there is no bad position and no barrier between the band and the audience. That is the entire argument for coming here rather than to a larger venue, and it is why touring acts on the way up are often more interesting here than they are two years later in a thousand-capacity room.
It is a dive in the honest sense — painted concrete, mismatched furniture, a yard out the back with picnic tables and string lights. Nothing about it is designed to photograph well, which in Wynwood is nearly a political position.
The yard is the part regulars use. On a warm night it is where the bar actually happens, and the indoor room is where the music is.
Pizza Tropical
The venue shares its premises with Pizza Tropical, which means you can eat a slice without leaving. That sounds trivial and it is the reason people stay for four hours instead of two.
It is also the practical answer to Wynwood's late-night food problem. Most of the neighbourhood's restaurants close well before the bars do, and having pizza attached to the venue removes the decision that usually ends a night early.
Eat before the headliner rather than after. The window gets busy at exactly the moment the room empties out.
It is also one of the very few places in the neighbourhood where the drinks are priced for people who live here. Wynwood's cocktail rooms have drifted steadily upwards over the past decade, and a bar where a round does not require thinking about is a meaningful part of why the local music community treats this as its clubhouse rather than as a venue.
How it fits into a Wynwood night
The natural shape is a weekday happy hour here at five, then dinner elsewhere in Wynwood, or a weekend show here at ten after eating somewhere first. Trying to do both on the same night does not work because of the schedule.
It sits within walking distance of most of Wynwood's bars and galleries, which makes it a reasonable first or last stop on a crawl. It is also considerably cheaper than almost anything else within those few blocks.
During III Points in October and Art Week in early December the neighbourhood fills and this room books accordingly, so those weeks are worth planning ahead for rather than walking in.
Practical notes and how to check what is on
Because the programming is a mix of ticketed shows, free nights and one-off events, there is no single reliable pattern — the line-up genuinely changes week to week and the only way to know is to look before you go.
Tickets for the ticketed shows are sold through the usual small-venue platforms rather than at the door, and the popular ones do sell out despite the low prices, precisely because the room is small.
The other reason to know this address is that it functions as a barometer for the neighbourhood. Wynwood has changed enormously since 2012 and most of what opened alongside Gramps has closed, been replaced, or turned into something aimed squarely at visitors. This bar has stayed the same size, at the same prices, booking the same kind of bands, which is rarer than it sounds.
If you want to understand what the district was before the murals became a ticketed attraction, an ordinary Tuesday here at six with a discounted drink in the back yard is the closest available approximation, and it costs almost nothing.
