Century Boulevard is a road nobody goes to on purpose. Rental car returns, chain hotels, long-stay parking, and a permanent low roar from the runways behind it — a strip of city that exists entirely to process people on their way somewhere else. Which makes the fact that one of the better small jazz rooms in Los Angeles sits on it genuinely strange, and extremely useful if you know.
The four hours before a flight are usually spent in a departure lounge for no reason at all. Ask Karpo what is worth doing near you, including the bits of the city nobody thinks to look at.
The geography, which is the whole trick
Sam First is at 6171 West Century Boulevard, on the east side of the building, near the Marriott Courtyard. From the LAX terminals it is a seven to ten minute walk. Not a shuttle, not a rideshare with a twenty-minute wait at a designated pickup lot — a walk, with a bag, in under ten minutes.
Consider what that actually unlocks. A three-hour layover, or the gap between checking out of a hotel and a red-eye, or the hour and a half after picking somebody up from a delayed flight, all become a jazz set instead of a departure lounge. There are very few airports anywhere where that sentence is true.
How the nights run
Tuesday to Saturday, the bar opens at six and there are two sets a night, at roughly half past seven and half past nine. Two sets is the format that makes the early one work: it is a complete, properly programmed set rather than a warm-up, and it finishes in time to get to a gate.
The programming is modern, eclectic and straight-ahead jazz, and the standard is high — this is a room musicians take seriously rather than a hotel bar with a trio in it. The room itself is small, midcentury in furnishing, with photography on the walls and a proper cocktail list rather than an afterthought one.
The layover plan, in detail
If you are flying out, the sequence is: bag drop, walk out of the terminal, ten minutes east, early set at half past seven, back through security by half past nine for a flight after eleven. That is a real plan and people do it. The failure mode is underestimating the walk back plus security at LAX, which can be brutal at that hour — build in an hour more than you think.
If you are flying in and staying locally, the second set at half past nine is the better one, because the room has warmed up and nobody in it is watching a clock. And if you are collecting somebody from a flight that has slipped by two hours, this is by an enormous margin the best thing within walking distance of the arrivals hall.

It is not only for travellers
Treating this purely as an airport amenity undersells it, and the people who go most often are not flying anywhere. Westchester, Playa del Rey, El Segundo and the beach cities are all within ten minutes, and for that whole stretch of the south-west county this is the nearest serious music room by a long way.
There is a real argument that the location is why the room is good. A jazz club on Century Boulevard cannot survive on passing trade or on being fashionable, because neither exists here. It survives on people who came specifically for the music, which is the audience every small venue says it wants and few actually get.
Practical points about the room
It is small, which means booking rather than turning up, particularly for a weekend set. It also means the sound is direct and unamplified in character — a small room is the correct container for a quartet, and this is the reason to come rather than the airport novelty.
Parking exists around the building and the surrounding hotels, though if you are arriving from a terminal you will not need it. What you will need is a plan for luggage: it is a small room and a large suitcase is a genuine problem for the people at the next table, so travel light or leave it at the hotel desk.
Why this is the right kind of odd find
The city is full of places marketed as hidden gems that are simply new, expensive and briefly under-publicised. This is the other kind: a genuinely good room in a genuinely unglamorous location, which stays under-visited not because it is exclusive but because nobody thinks to look at a map of Century Boulevard for somewhere to spend an evening.
That is also why it keeps working. A place that is hard to stumble into is a place where everybody present made a decision to be there, and on a Tuesday at half past seven, forty people who all decided to be there is a considerably better room than four hundred who happened to be passing.
