That head start shows in the selection. This is not a shop that added a natural section; it is a shop built on those relationships, which means the buying goes deeper than the obvious importers.
The range covers both ends. The staff are equally set up to help whether you are spending twenty dollars or two hundred, and the twenty-dollar recommendation is treated as seriously as the other.
How to use the staff
The reason to buy wine in a shop rather than online is the conversation, and this is a shop where that conversation is the product. Say what you liked last, what you are eating, and what you want to spend.
There is no pretence about it, which is worth stating because natural wine retail has a reputation for the opposite. Ask a basic question and you get a straight answer.
If you are buying a gift, say so early. The shop runs extensive gift services and door-to-door delivery, and both are easier arranged at the start of the visit than at the till.
The hours, and the day to avoid
Tuesday to Saturday runs 11am to 7pm. Sunday is noon to 6pm, with the tasting inside that. Monday it is closed.
A 7pm close is early for a wine destination, which is the main practical constraint here. This is a daytime and early-evening errand rather than a night out, and planning it after dinner does not work.
The best non-Sunday slot is a weekday afternoon, when the shop is quiet and the staff have time. That is when the recommendations are most useful.
If you want to taste before you commit
The shop pours on Sunday afternoons, and the reason to care as a buyer is narrow and specific: it is a chance to try something before carrying a case of it home. Treat it as a purchasing tool rather than as an event.
Tasting first changes what you buy. People who taste tend to go one step further from what they know and one step up in price, because the risk has been removed — which is precisely the argument for buying wine in a shop with an open bottle on the counter.
If you cannot make a Sunday, it does not matter much. The staff recommendation is the substitute, and on a quiet weekday it is a more detailed conversation than you would get in a busy room with a bottle in front of you.
Where it sits
6801 Melrose Avenue puts it on the Hollywood stretch of Melrose, east of the shopping blocks, in an area of small independent businesses rather than flagship stores.
It is a drive for most of Los Angeles, and street parking on Melrose is metered and manageable outside peak hours. Coming for the Sunday tasting means arriving before the afternoon fills up.
There is plenty to eat within a few minutes in either direction, which makes the shop a natural first stop rather than a standalone trip.
