Four nights, and they close when they feel like it
The bar opens Wednesday through Saturday, roughly six in the evening to midnight. It is closed the other three nights, and it closes entirely when the family takes a holiday, which happens and is not always announced far in advance. Checking before you drive is not optional here.
That volatility is the price of a bar that has stayed in one family for six decades rather than becoming a chain. It is also why regulars check the social feed before setting out, and why you should too.
Cash only, and a room the size of a room
There is no card machine. There is an ATM at the back, which charges what ATMs in bars charge. Bringing cash is the single most useful piece of preparation for this visit, and it also speeds up a bar where one or two people are making every drink.
With a dozen stools and standing room for not many more, the bar fills early and stays full. Arrive at opening if you want to sit; arrive later and expect to stand, or to wait outside on Sunset until seats free up.
Ninety-odd drinks and a list worth reading
The menu runs to more than ninety cocktails, most of them rum-based, many of them house creations that exist nowhere else. This is a serious tiki bar rather than a themed one — the drinks are made from fresh juice and multiple rums rather than from a bottled mix, and the complexity of the list is the point.
Ask for a recommendation rather than reading the whole thing. Tell them whether you want something light or strong, rum or not, and let the bar choose; the house specialities are the reason to be there and the staff know which one fits what you just described.
The drinks themselves reward a little curiosity. Classic tiki cocktails are built on blends of two or three rums with fresh citrus, house syrups and small amounts of spice or bitters, which is why a good one tastes layered rather than simply sweet. Ordering the same drink twice on different nights is also how you discover that a bar of this age makes them consistently, which is harder than it sounds when everything is built by hand.
Tiki as an American invention
It is worth being clear-eyed about what tiki is: a mid-century American bar culture that borrowed Polynesian imagery, mostly invented in California in the 1930s and 1940s, with drinks built on Caribbean rum. It is not Polynesian and never was, and the best bars in the genre are honest about that while taking the drink-making entirely seriously.
This one has been operating continuously since 1961, which puts it among the last surviving links to the original wave rather than the revival. The room has accumulated rather than been designed, and that difference is visible in every square foot of it.
The house ritual is worth knowing before it happens to you. Certain drinks come with a bit of business at the bar — a shout, a flame, everybody in the room joining in — and it catches first-timers off guard. Go along with it. A bar this small runs on everyone participating in the same evening, and the regulars on the stools next to you have been doing it for years.
The other unwritten rule is that a dozen stools means you do not sit on one for four hours if there are people waiting outside. Have two or three drinks, talk to whoever is next to you, and give the seat up. That is how a bar this size stays a bar rather than a queue.
This stretch of Sunset
The bar sits on the Los Feliz end of Sunset Boulevard, between Silver Lake and Hollywood, on a strip of small businesses, record shops, restaurants and other bars. It is one of the few genuinely walkable runs in this part of the city.
Park once and stay in the neighbourhood: Silver Lake's reservoir loop is minutes east, Los Feliz village north, and a dozen places to eat within a short walk. Street parking on Sunset is metered and enforced, which is the usual Los Angeles tax on a small bar with no lot.
For a first visit, go on a Wednesday. The bar is open, the room is not three deep, and you have a realistic chance of a stool and a conversation with whoever is making the drinks — which is most of what makes a bar this small worth crossing the city for. Friday and Saturday are the same room with four times the people in it.
