Rooftop Country Bar in Hollywood: Desert 5 Spot
Desert 5 Spot at 6516 Selma Ave is Hollywood's rooftop country bar, with free beginner line dancing Wednesday and Friday, a house band and 2-for-$10 tacos.
Desert 5 Spot, at 6516 Selma Ave in Hollywood, is a rooftop country bar that trades sawdust for 1970s Palm Springs: cactus, rattan, roadside-motel nostalgia and a house band that plays honky-tonk most weekends. If you search country bar near me anywhere between Hollywood and Los Feliz, this is the room where a free beginner line dance lesson, a Ranch Water and a view over the Hollywood Hills all happen on the same night.
Pioneertown on a Hollywood rooftop
The bar sits on the roof of the tommie Hollywood hotel and debuted in December 2021, when UncoverLA covered the opening of the roughly 5,000-square-foot space from Ten Five Hospitality. The official LA page describes the idea plainly: the free-spirited soul of 1970s Palm Springs and the rustic allure of Pioneertown, inspired by Joshua Tree hideouts, throwback motels and Cosmic Americana. There are old-fashioned jukeboxes playing country hits and a small stage for the in-house band, The Desert 5.
Desert 5 Spot is a small group of country bars, with sister rooms in Williamsburg and Washington, DC. The Hollywood rooftop is the West Coast outpost, and its look leans harder into the desert than the Brooklyn room: open sky, potted cacti and the glow of Hollywood billboards in place of a brick warehouse.
Bootloose lessons and the weekly calendar
The schedule is the main reason to come on a weeknight. Bootloose line dancing runs on Wednesday and Friday with beginner lessons at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm, and the official Shindigs page asks guests to RSVP for them. On Saturday from 8pm to 9:30pm the floor switches to intermediate open line dancing led by an instructor named Ash, for dancers who already know the basics and want to move faster.
Wednesday also brings Cowboy Karaoke at 9pm, which turns the stage over to anyone brave enough to try Dolly or Garth. On Friday and Saturday, Johnny Travis Jr. and The Desert 5 band share the night with country DJs and special guests, and Saturday features DJ Colt Classic. In October 2026 the calendar added a Cowboy Poetry Night with an open mic on Tuesday, October 20, and a ticketed Vampire Saloon Halloween party with live music and burlesque on October 30 and 31. On Tuesday, November 17, the Ole Smoky Roadshow brings a ticketed Moonshine & Music night with a 7:30pm showtime.

Desert Hour, tacos and margaritas
The best value is Desert Hour, which runs Wednesday through Friday until 8pm. The Shindigs page lists tacos at two for $10, beer and wine at $6 and cocktails at $9. That window lines up with the first two line dance lessons, so arriving early on a Wednesday or Friday means cheap tacos, a drink and a lesson before the rooftop fills.
The kitchen is built around what the bar calls Outlaw Tacos, including carne asada and a mushroom al pastor option, plus cowboy nachos for the table. On the drinks list, the Ranch Water is billed as an exclusive of the New York and Los Angeles locations, and the LA menu adds a Cactus Cooler made with Tito's vodka, Mandarine Napoléon, pineapple gum syrup, lemon, lime and soda. Margaritas and cold canned beer round out the order for most groups.
Grammy parties and private bookings
The rooftop has picked up a celebrity reputation. The press section on the bar's Our Story page links a February 2026 Grammys roundup that featured a Desert 5 party for Grammy winner Shaboozey, and a July 2025 story about Snoop Dogg crashing a country show on the roof with a mic in hand. Those nights are rare, but they explain why the room fills with industry crowds during awards season.
For groups, the whole space can be rented for private events through a form on the website. The private events page is running a holiday offer this season: book a holiday party by November 20 and spend $10,000, and the bar adds complimentary mechanical bull riding or a live country DJ. That is the only time a bull appears in the Hollywood offer, so do not expect one on a regular night.
Dress code, tables and timing
Desert 5 Spot enforces a cowboy dress code. In the bar's own words, cowboys do not wear athletic shorts, athletic tops, sweatpants or flip-flops, and the page reminds guests that it is boot country. Jeans and boots are the safe choice; a hat is welcome but optional. The code applies at the door, so leave the gym clothes at home.
Tables can be booked through SevenRooms from the Book A Table link on the bar's site, which is the way to go for a birthday or bachelorette group on a band night. Walk-ins work best early. Doors open at 6pm Tuesday through Thursday and at 5pm on Friday and Saturday, and the rooftop is closed Sunday and Monday. Private events in the space are booked through a separate form on the website.
Before and after in Hollywood
Selma Avenue is a quiet side street a block south of Hollywood Boulevard, which makes the rooftop an easy add-on to a classic Hollywood night. Walk one block north to the Hollywood Walk of Fame for the stars along the boulevard, or plan the evening around a show at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard near Vine Street. Both are an easy walk from the hotel entrance.
The Metro B Line stops at Hollywood/Vine, a short walk east, which saves dealing with Hollywood parking on a Friday night. Plan a rideshare home if the Desert Hour margaritas turn into a few rounds. After the last set, Hollywood Boulevard is the easiest place to meet a car.
