Searching coffee near me on the Venice boardwalk usually produces a run of places selling smoothies to people in swimwear. Menotti's Coffee Stop, at the end of Windward Avenue where it meets the beach, is the one that takes espresso seriously, and the contrast between what it does and where it stands is most of the appeal.

A proper espresso bar at the beach
The shop occupies a small corner space in one of the historic arcaded buildings on Windward, the street Abbot Kinney laid out in 1905 when he built Venice of America with canals and colonnades modelled on the Italian original. Most of the canals were filled in by 1929, but the arcades on Windward survived, and this is one of them.
Inside, the operation is standing-room, counter-focused and fast, closer to an Italian bar than to an American cafe with sofas. That format is deliberate and it works: you order, you drink, you leave, and the counter turns over quickly enough to handle a beach crowd without the quality dropping.
The espresso is the thing to judge it on. This is a shop built around the shot rather than around syrups, and the milk drinks are sized closer to European proportions than American ones.
What to order and when
A straight espresso or a cortado is the correct first order, and it will tell you more in thirty seconds than reading the whole menu will. If you want something longer, the flat white is reliable; if you want something cold, the iced options hold up better than most because the base is strong enough to survive dilution.
Morning is the good hour. Between about 7am and 10am the boardwalk is populated by people running, swimming and walking dogs rather than by the full daytime carnival, and the counter is busy but not overwhelmed. From midday the queue lengthens and the crowd changes entirely.
The boardwalk is the context
Ocean Front Walk is an unusual piece of public space: about two and a half miles of continuous pedestrian promenade with the Pacific on one side and an uninterrupted line of vendors, performers, murals and small businesses on the other. It is loud, crowded and genuinely strange, and it has been that way since the 1960s.
Muscle Beach, the outdoor weights area that made Venice famous in the bodybuilding era, is a few minutes south. The skate park is between the two. Both are free to watch and both are more entertaining than they sound if you have never seen them.
Windward Avenue itself runs inland from here and is the most architecturally intact part of Abbot Kinney's original plan, so it is worth walking a block or two east before or after your coffee to see the colonnades properly.
Venice of America, briefly
Abbot Kinney was a tobacco millionaire who bought marshland south of Santa Monica and spent a fortune turning it into a resort with canals, gondolas, a pier and an amusement park, opening on the Fourth of July in 1905. The idea was a cultural colony; what drew the crowds was the roller coaster.
The city was annexed by Los Angeles in 1926 and most of the canals were paved over three years later for cars. A handful survive a few blocks inland and are now among the quietest and most expensive residential streets on the Westside, which is a fair summary of what happened to Venice generally.
How to build a morning around it
The efficient version: coffee at the counter, twenty minutes walking north along the sand toward Santa Monica, back along the promenade, then east up Windward toward Abbot Kinney Boulevard for a proper breakfast. That covers the beach, the architecture and the shopping street in about two hours.
If you are cycling, the beach path runs from Will Rogers State Beach in the north to Torrance in the south, and Venice sits roughly in the middle. A coffee here is the natural stop on that ride, which is why the counter fills with people in cycling kit on weekend mornings.
One thing worth knowing before you plan an afternoon here: the boardwalk empties fast after sunset and the character of the promenade changes substantially once the vendors pack up. This is a daytime neighbourhood at the beach end, and the evening activity has largely moved inland to Abbot Kinney and Rose Avenue.

Address: 56 Windward Avenue, Venice, Los Angeles, at the boardwalk end of the street. Morning to afternoon hours; this is not an evening operation. Seating is minimal and mostly outside, so plan to stand or walk with your drink.
Come before 10am if you want the calm version of the boardwalk, order an espresso or a cortado rather than something elaborate, and walk the arcades on Windward before heading to the sand. Parking near the boardwalk is expensive and fills early; the lots on Venice Boulevard are usually cheaper than the ones directly on Ocean Front.
