Clubs Near Me in LA: What Academy LA Asks at the Door

A wide boulevard in Hollywood at night with lit facades and palm trees

Academy LA is a large nightclub at 6021 Hollywood Boulevard that runs two nights a week and books the kind of names that fill a room of that size. It is also a venue with a published set of rules that are genuinely enforced, which is worth knowing because Hollywood clubs have a reputation for arbitrary doors and this one is closer to the opposite: the requirements are written down, they are specific, and if you meet them you are in. The failure mode here is not being unlucky. It is turning up on the wrong night, in the wrong shoes, with a photo of your ID on your phone.

A door with published rules is a door you can prepare for. Ask Karpo what Academy LA is booking this weekend and what the dress code actually rules out.

Check the night and the dress code

Two nights a week, 10pm to 3am

The venue operates Friday and Saturday, 10pm to 3am. That is the whole week — there is no Thursday, no Sunday, and no daytime version of this room.

Arriving at ten means an empty club; the room fills considerably later, and the headline set is usually well into the night. If you want to be there for the main booking, work backwards from the set time rather than the door time.

A 3am close is late by Los Angeles standards, where the bar cutoff shapes most nights. Plan the journey home accordingly, because Hollywood Boulevard at 3am is not a straightforward place to find a car.

21 and over, physical ID only

You must be 21 or older and everyone must present a valid, physical form of identification. The word physical is doing real work in that sentence — a photograph or a scan will not get you through.

This applies to everyone in the group regardless of how obviously over 21 they look. There is no discretion available to the door on age.

If you are visiting from abroad, bring the passport rather than a home-country licence. It is the document that is accepted without discussion.

Upscale-casual, and what that excludes

The dress code is upscale-casual and it is enforced rather than suggested. The specific exclusions are useful: no sandals or flip-flops, and no sportswear including hats and jerseys.

Two carve-outs are worth knowing. Open-toed heels are allowed, despite the ban on sandals — so the rule is about the shoe's register, not about covered toes. And DJ merchandise is permitted despite the sportswear ban, which is a sensible exception at a venue where a large share of the room has bought a shirt at the show.

Everything else follows from those. If you are unsure about an outfit, the shoes and the hat are the two things the door notices first.

Tickets: buy them, do not chance the door

Tickets are sold through the venue's own site and through the usual third-party club-ticketing platforms. For a booking with a name attached, buying ahead is the difference between walking in and standing outside a sold-out room.

Table service exists and is the standard route for groups, particularly larger ones. It is expensive and it removes essentially all uncertainty, which for a birthday or a group who have travelled in is often the right trade.

General admission queues are longest between about eleven and one. Arriving on either side of that window is a materially shorter wait for the same night.

Where it sits in Hollywood

6021 Hollywood Boulevard puts it in the middle of the Hollywood nightlife district, which cuts both ways. There is plenty to do before and after within walking distance, and the whole area is congested and heavily policed on a weekend night.

Parking is structures and lots at weekend-night prices. Given the 3am close and the drinking, this is one of the more obvious places in Los Angeles not to drive.

The Hollywood/Vine Metro station is close, which is genuinely useful earlier in the evening and less so at closing time. Sort out the ride home before you need it.
