Seven thousand and nine Sunset Boulevard is the In-N-Out that serves Hollywood, and it does two things that the San Francisco branch cannot: it has a drive-thru, and it sits in the middle of a neighbourhood with a genuine late-night population. It closes at one in the morning Sunday through Thursday and half past one on Friday and Saturday.

The hours against Hollywood's night
Hollywood's venues run past two, and the food options after midnight thin out sharply once you leave the boulevard's immediate tourist strip. A one in the morning close does not cover the whole night, but it covers the part where most people actually get hungry — the stretch between the venues emptying and the last call.
That makes the timing specific. If your night ends at half past twelve, this works. If it ends at two, it does not, and you are looking at the twenty-four hour options further west and south instead. Knowing which side of one o'clock you are on is the whole decision.
The drive-thru changes the queue dynamics
Unlike the San Francisco location, this one has both a drive-thru and dine-in seating, and at peak the two queues behave completely differently. The drive-thru can back out onto Sunset while the counter inside is moving steadily, or the reverse.
Look at both before committing. A drive-thru line wrapped around the building is frequently slower than parking and walking in, and the reverse is true at closing time when the room is full of people who have already eaten. Ninety seconds of assessment saves fifteen minutes surprisingly often.
Ordering, including the parts not printed
The menu is deliberately small — burgers, fries, shakes, drinks — and the interesting part is the set of modifications the chain will make without them appearing on the board. Animal Style is the one to know: mustard-cooked patties, pickles and extra spread.
Fries Animal Style, or well-done, is the other standard adjustment and the one that fixes the most common complaint about the chain. If you are ordering here for the first time, a Double-Double Animal Style and fries well-done is the order that shows you what the fuss is about.
Where it sits in Hollywood
Sunset at Orange puts you south of the Hollywood Boulevard tourist strip and in the working part of Hollywood — studios, offices, and the venues along Sunset and Vine. It is a short drive from almost anywhere in the neighbourhood and a walkable distance from a good deal of it.
That position is why it works as a night-out endpoint. The music venues and bars in this part of Hollywood are within a few minutes, and the drive-thru means a group can eat without any of the friction of finding parking and a table at half past midnight.
Parking and arriving
There is a car park attached, which is not a given in Hollywood and is a meaningful part of why this location works. At peak it fills and the overflow parks on the surrounding streets, which are metered and permit-restricted in patches.
If you are drinking, the drive-thru is obviously not the answer and neither is driving there. The neighbourhood is dense enough that a rideshare from a venue to here and then home is straightforward, and the walk-in counter serves the same food.
The room at closing time
The last half hour before close is a specific scene: people coming off shifts at the venues, people who have been out, and staff cleaning around both. The counter stays fast because the crew working that shift do it every night, and the order accuracy does not drop the way it does at a lot of chains at that hour.
If you are arriving close to the cut-off, order at the drive-thru rather than walking in. The dining room stops seating before the kitchen stops cooking, and the last orders of the night are consistently taken through the window rather than at the counter.
What it costs
Prices here have stayed genuinely low relative to every comparable burger in Los Angeles, which is a deliberate company position rather than an accident. A double burger, fries and a drink lands well under what a comparable order costs at any of the newer smash-burger operations in the city.
That combination — low price, consistent product, late hours, a drive-thru and a car park — is why the queues exist. None of the four things individually is remarkable; having all of them at once, in Hollywood, at half past midnight, is.
Against the alternatives
Los Angeles has an enormous amount of extraordinary late-night food and a great deal of it is better than this — the taco trucks, the Thai kitchens in East Hollywood, the Korean rooms further south all run late and all offer more than a burger.
What In-N-Out has is predictability, a car park, a drive-thru and a price that has stayed reasonable. On a night when the group cannot agree and it is half past midnight, those four things beat a better meal that requires three more decisions. That is the honest case and it is enough.
