Every October the same problem occurs in group chats across Los Angeles. Somebody proposes a haunted attraction, two people are enthusiastic, one person quietly does not want to be grabbed in the dark by a stranger, and there are children involved. The default answer is to split up. The better answer is that the city's largest Halloween event by attendance is not frightening at all.
Not everybody wants to be chased through a corridor in October, and the alternatives are better than the internet suggests. Tell Karpo who you are going with and get the seasonal things near you that suit them.
What it is
Carved runs at Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge from the start of October to the first of November, nightly, six until ten in the evening. It is a botanical garden lit with carved pumpkins and installations, walked at your own pace, with no actors jumping out of anything.
The setting is what makes it more than a novelty. Descanso is a serious garden — a mature oak woodland, a camellia forest, a rose garden and a Japanese garden across a hundred and fifty acres in the foothills — and walking it after dark is something you cannot otherwise do. Half the appeal is simply being in a large garden at night, which is a rare experience in a county this size.
New this year
Two additions. The labyrinth holds new sculptures by the Helsinki-based artist Alexander Reichstein, in what is his first exhibition in the United States — a genuinely unusual thing to encounter inside a seasonal event, and the sort of detail that separates this from a pumpkin display. Bobolito's Rhizome piece has also been repositioned into the Oak Grove, which is the strongest part of the garden to walk through in the dark.
The other change matters more if you have children: for the first time, trick-or-treating happens inside the event on Halloween night itself, included in that evening's admission. For families who dislike the street version — the driving, the unfamiliar neighbourhoods, the negotiation about how far to walk — a contained, lit, supervised garden is a straightforward improvement.

The ticketing is worth understanding
This is timed entry, and the price moves substantially by date and slot — non-member adult tickets run from around twenty-nine dollars to fifty-two, with children from nineteen to thirty-seven. The cheap end is early October on a weeknight; the expensive end is the weekend before Halloween.
The Anytime ticket is the interesting option and the one people misread. At eighty-five dollars for non-members it looks like a premium upgrade; what it actually buys is the ability to decide the evening later. For anybody whose October is unpredictable, that is a hedge rather than a luxury — the alternative is buying a fixed slot in September and discovering in week four that you cannot make it. Members pay sixty-five for the same flexibility, which is one of the arguments for membership if you are local.
Which slot to book
The first slot at six is not fully dark in early October, which sounds like a drawback and is a genuine trade-off: you see the garden itself, but the lighting has less to work with. By the second half of the month six o'clock is properly dark, and the early slot becomes the best of both — full effect, smallest crowd, and you are out by half past seven.
Later slots are darker and busier. With children, early is obviously right. Without them, the last entry of the evening is the quietest walk you will get, and a garden path lined with lit pumpkins with almost nobody else on it is the version worth having.
A word on what you are actually looking at. The carving is not the pumpkin-on-a-doorstep kind — the displays run to large-scale arrangements built up over stands and structures, and several installations are art pieces that would be in the garden regardless of the season. That is the reason this holds an adult's attention for an hour rather than fifteen minutes, and the reason people who came the first time for their children keep coming back without them.
La Cañada Flintridge, and getting there
The gardens sit in the foothills near where the 210 meets the 2, about twenty minutes from downtown Los Angeles outside of peak traffic and close to Pasadena, which is the practical base for the evening. There is no useful transit connection, so this is a driving event; parking is on site and the mass arrival at each timed slot is the reason to leave more margin than the map suggests.
It also gets noticeably colder here than in the basin once the sun is down — the gardens are up against the San Gabriels and the temperature difference on an October evening is real. Take a jacket, and take one for whoever in the group insists they will not need one.
For dinner, Old Town Pasadena is fifteen minutes east with the most options, and the stretch of Foothill Boulevard nearer the gardens has enough for a straightforward meal beforehand. An early slot followed by dinner in Pasadena is the shape most people should aim for.
