Wildhawk sits just off the busiest stretch of the Mission and looks, from the outside, like a bar that is going to be very serious about itself. It is not. The interior is deliberately overdressed — velvet, brass, a lot of dark green, a ceiling worth looking at — and the drinks list underneath all that is playful, well made and priced for people who live in the neighbourhood rather than for people visiting it.

The room is doing a bit
The design leans hard into a kind of bohemian Victorian excess: patterned wallpaper, tufted banquettes, ornate mirrors, warm low light and a general sense that somebody enjoyed themselves specifying it. In a city where the default cocktail bar aesthetic has been dim-and-industrial for fifteen years, walking into a room that is this committed to being decorative is genuinely refreshing.
It also has a practical effect: the room reads as an occasion without costing like one. This is a good place to take somebody on a first date or to start an evening, precisely because it looks more expensive than it is.
What to drink
The list runs to well-made modern cocktails with a sense of humour rather than a manifesto, and it changes. Vermouth and low-alcohol drinks have historically had real presence on it, which is worth knowing if you want a second or third round without the evening ending early — a good vermouth-based drink is one of the more useful things a bar can offer and very few of them bother.
If you would rather not read a list, describe what you want and let the bar route you. The staff are quick and unpretentious about it. There is beer and wine for people who want them, and neither is an afterthought.
The early hours are the good ones
This is the practical advice that matters most. The Mission's bars fill from about nine and are properly busy by half past ten, and Wildhawk is close enough to the Valencia corridor to catch that wave. Before about nine, it is a comfortable room where you can hear each other, get a seat on a banquette and have the bartender's attention. After eleven on a Friday it is a different proposition entirely — busier, louder, and standing.
Neither version is wrong; they are just different nights. If the point is conversation and good drinks, come early. If the point is a Mission Friday, come late and accept the crowd.
Happy hour and value
Early-evening pricing exists at bars of this type and moves around, so it is worth confirming what is currently running rather than relying on a figure somebody quoted last year. What is more consistent is that Wildhawk is not priced at the top of the Mission's range — full-price drinks here are noticeably more reasonable than at the neighbourhood's more self-serious cocktail rooms, which is a large part of why locals use it as a default.
There are bar snacks rather than a food menu. Eat first — the Mission has more good food per block than anywhere else in the city — and treat this as the drinking half of the evening.
Where it puts you
Being a street off Valencia rather than on it is the whole positioning. You are two minutes from the busiest bar and restaurant corridor in San Francisco, without being in the middle of the queue for it, which means walking in is realistic at hours when the places round the corner have a line at the door.
The 16th Street and 24th Street BART stations are both a reasonable walk, and the Mission is one of the few parts of the city where getting home late without a car is straightforward. Do not drive; parking here on a weekend evening is a genuine ordeal.
Why the vermouth thing matters
Most American cocktail bars treat vermouth as an ingredient rather than a drink, which is a hangover from a period when the only vermouth available was oxidised and sitting on a back shelf at room temperature. A bar that takes it seriously — keeps it refrigerated, turns the bottles over, and puts vermouth-forward drinks on the list — is offering something genuinely useful: drinks with real complexity at half the alcohol of a spirit-forward cocktail.
The practical benefit is straightforward. Three vermouth-based drinks over an evening is a pleasant evening. Three negronis is a different kind of evening and a worse next morning. If you want to stay out for four hours and still be able to have a conversation at the end of them, this is the section of the list to read.
Taking somebody here
This is, unapologetically, a good date bar, and the reasons are structural rather than romantic. The banquettes let two people sit side by side facing the room, which is easier than facing each other across a table. The light is low enough to be flattering and high enough to read a menu. The room gives you something to talk about in the first two minutes. And the bill at the end is not intimidating.
The one thing to get right is timing. A first drink at seven works. A first drink at eleven on a Saturday means standing in a crowd and shouting, which is a much harder start.
