Most happy hour searches in Downtown Miami return the same thing: a hotel bar with two discounted cocktails and a hard stop at 7pm. Mama Tried, on the corner of NE 1st Street and NE 2nd Avenue, runs a different arrangement. The discount starts the moment the doors open and runs until 8pm, seven days a week, and the list it applies to is long enough that it functions less like a promotion and more like a second menu.

The happy hour is structured as a price ladder rather than a short list of specials, and it is worth reading it that way.

- $5 — well pours at an inch and a half, draft beer, White Claw, and the whiskey shot of the day
- $6 — white wine and pink wine by the glass
- $7 — red wine, rosé spritz, and the cocktail tier: French 75, Tommy's margarita, Scotch and soda, Lil' Lemon Drop, classic daiquiri, Dark 'n' Stormy, highball, Rude Boy, Mentirita, and the old fashioned of the day

The $7 cocktail tier is the reason to come. These are not sweetened well-drink versions of the classics — the daiquiri is the three-ingredient build, the French 75 is made properly, and the old fashioned rotates so the whiskey is different on different nights. Set against what a cocktail costs in Brickell or on Miami Beach, the $7 tier is the outlier — most downtown happy hours discount two or three drinks and leave the rest of the list alone. A table of four can order four different proper cocktails and pay less than two full-price drinks would cost eight blocks east.
The Mentirita and the Rude Boy are house builds rather than classics, and both sit on the same $7 tier during the window, which is unusual. Off the happy hour list, the bar keeps a run of pop-culture-named drinks — the Porn Star Martini, the Raspberry Beret, the Smokey and the Bandit — priced normally.
The room
Mama Tried opened on 8 June 2018 in the former home of Pub One, a downtown dive, and the renovation went in the opposite direction from most Miami bars of that moment. Instead of white walls and palms, it went 1970s: wall-to-wall red carpet, a big U-shaped bar with a pale oak top and a dark front embossed in a gold geometric lattice, and a row of large mirrored copper globe lamps hanging low over the whole thing. There is a fibre-optic starfield set into the ceiling soffit.
The partners came from bars that already worked — Dan Binkiewicz from Sweet Liberty, Blackbird Ordinary and Purdy Lounge, and Mauricio Lacayo from The Bend Liquor Lounge, alongside Domingo Murillo. That lineage shows in the drink builds rather than the decor.
It is about 2,250 square feet and it is set up for staying rather than posing: a pool table, arcade cabinets, TVs, and deep green tufted banquettes along one wall. The bar seats are the good seats during happy hour because that is where you can ask what the rotating pours are.
Timing it
The happy hour anchor is fixed and reliable: it ends at 8pm every day. The opening time is the part that has moved — recent listings put the doors at 4pm on weekdays and 5pm on weekends, where older write-ups had it at 3pm daily. Worth a quick check on the day if you are building a plan around the earliest hour.
The closing time has not moved. The bar runs to 5am, which makes it one of the few places downtown that is still a functioning bar rather than a club at 3am. The practical consequence is that the 6pm to 8pm window is quiet and the same room after midnight is a completely different environment.
Music is programmed by night rather than left to a playlist. Tuesdays lean R&B and 1970s soul, Thursdays run country, and Sunday is strictly disco. If you want a conversation, come early on any night; if you want the room going, come late on one of those three.
The pool table is the other thing that shapes an evening here. Early on it is usually free and functions as the reason to stay past one drink; later it is spoken for and the room reorganises around the bar and the banquettes. If a group is the point of the night, come at the start of the window and claim it.
Getting there without a car is straightforward — the Metromover's First Street station is a short walk, which is worth using given how downtown parking and the 5am close interact.
