That single rule is why Los Angeles happy hours are structured as per-item discounts inside a time window rather than as packages, and why bars compete on how long the window runs and what is on the list rather than on flat rates. Once you know that, the menus start making sense: a bar with a genuinely late window is making a deliberate choice to give up margin during its busiest hours, and it usually wants something in return — you sitting at the bar rather than a table, or ordering food.
The three shapes of a late deal
The first is the extended window: a bar that simply runs its discount to 7pm or 8pm instead of 6pm. These are most common in neighborhoods where dinner starts late — Highland Park, Echo Park, Frogtown, Silver Lake, the eastern half of Hollywood.
The second is the reverse happy hour, which starts at 10pm or later and exists to fill the room between the dinner rush and closing. Koreatown runs this play harder than anywhere else in the city, to the point that it deserves its own guide, and the kitchens there are still going when most of the Westside has locked up.

In Echo Park, El Prado and the bars around Sunset Boulevard run late windows on weeknights because the crowd genuinely does not arrive before nine.
In Hollywood and West Hollywood, Barney's Beanery is the durable answer — several locations, long hours, an enormous list, and a happy hour that has been part of its identity for decades. Downtown, Tom's Watch Bar at L.A. Live is built for game nights specifically, with a wall of screens and a schedule that moves with the fixtures rather than the clock.
On the Westside, Sonny McLean's in Santa Monica is the Boston bar, which matters because transplant bars run on the East Coast schedule — they open early for morning kickoffs and they discount when their games are on, not when the local rush happens.
Football season moves happy hour to breakfast
This is the part that surprises people who move here. A 1pm kickoff on the East Coast is 10am in Los Angeles. From September through January, a whole tier of Los Angeles bars opens in the morning on Sundays, serves food from the moment the doors open, and runs its drink specials during the early window rather than the evening one. Aggregator sites keep menus that closed during the pandemic; search results routinely show hours that were changed two years ago. Three checks, in order of usefulness: the bar's own recent social posts, because that is where a temporary change actually gets announced; a phone call, which takes ninety seconds and is answered more often than you would guess; and the specific questions that catch the common traps — does the deal cover the patio, does it cover the whole bar or only the counter, and is it suspended on game days and holidays.
Practical notes
Happy hour is almost always bar-and-counter only, not the dining room. Many windows close on Fridays and Saturdays or shrink to an hour. Reverse happy hours often require you to be seated after a specific time rather than merely arriving then. Parking is part of the price in this city — a two-dollar saving per drink evaporates in a fifteen-dollar lot, so weigh the neighborhood, not just the menu. And if the room is showing a game you care about, get there before the anthem; the good seats go first and no discount fixes standing at the back.
