Happy hour in the Mission is not one window, it is several overlapping ones, and the gap between the earliest and the latest is about four hours. That matters more here than in most neighbourhoods because the district is dense enough to walk between three or four rooms in an evening, which means the deciding factor is rarely which bar is best. It is which one is still running its cheap hours when you arrive.

The Long Afternoon Window
Zeitgeist at 199 Valencia Street runs the longest and most useful happy hour in the neighbourhood: 2pm to 6pm, four hours, on a combination format rather than a discount list. The specials are built as pairings, with a Tecate and Hornitos Reposado combination at 8 dollars, a PBR and Jameson combination at 8 dollars, and a High Life and Fernet combination at 9 dollars.
Two structural things follow from that. First, a 2pm start means this is the room that anchors an early evening, and any plan that begins elsewhere at five has already used up half of it. Second, the combination pricing means the value here is fixed rather than percentage-based, so it does not degrade as the rest of the menu gets more expensive. That is why it has stayed the neighbourhood's reference point for so long.
The other reason it matters is the garden. Zeitgeist's outdoor space is one of the few in the Mission large enough to absorb a group without a booking, which is exactly what a four-hour window is for.
The Short Evening Windows
At the other end, Cubita at 2516 Mission Street runs happy hour Tuesday to Friday, 5pm to 6:30pm. Ninety minutes, four days a week, is a completely different proposition from four hours seven days a week, and it needs to be the first stop of an evening rather than a fallback.
This address is also the single most important correction in Mission nightlife right now. Cubita occupies the space that was El Techo, and El Techo no longer operates as a standalone venue. A large amount of published guidance still sends people to a rooftop that is under different management with a different name and different hours. If someone recommends El Techo to you, they are working from an old map.
Wildhawk at 3464 19th Street is the cocktail room in this bracket, open Tuesday and Wednesday 5pm to midnight and Thursday to Saturday 5pm to 2am. It lists a happy hour, and the 5pm open across the week means it fits the same early-evening slot as Cubita rather than the afternoon slot Zeitgeist occupies.
What Closed, and Why It Keeps Mattering
Bon Voyage at 584 Valencia Street is closed. It opened in 2018 to a great deal of attention from a well-known San Francisco team, and it appears on a striking number of current Mission nightlife lists anyway. Old Bus Tavern at 3193 Mission Street is also long closed, with its last service in September 2018, and it too still shows up in circulation.
Those two matter beyond the individual addresses, because they demonstrate the failure mode of Mission nightlife guides generally. Bars in this neighbourhood change hands frequently, the published lists do not, and the older an article is the more likely it is to send you to a locked door. The correct habit is to confirm the room exists before you build a night around it, which is not a fussy suggestion in a district with this much turnover.
There is a second, quieter reason to check first. When a room changes hands the licence, the hours and the format usually change with it, and a rooftop that used to run a long weekend afternoon can reopen as a restaurant with a ninety-minute weekday window. That is precisely what happened at 2516 Mission Street, and it converts a plan built around a long lazy afternoon into a narrow slot you can miss by twenty minutes.
How to Sequence a Mission Evening
The workable structure is early-long, then short, then late. Start at the four-hour afternoon window because it is the only one that will still be running at five thirty. Move to a ninety-minute evening window before it closes at six thirty. Finish in a room that runs to midnight midweek and to two on a weekend, of which there are several within a few blocks.
Two practical notes. Most Mission cheap hours run roughly 3pm to 6pm on weekdays, with a number of rooms extending to seven or eight, so the safe assumption for an unfamiliar bar is that the window closes at six and anything later is a bonus. And Trick Dog at 3010 20th Street, which runs 4pm to midnight Monday to Sunday and to 2am Friday and Saturday, is worth knowing as the late anchor even though it is a full-price destination rather than a discount one. Ending somewhere good matters more than saving four dollars on the last round.
