Glassell Park sits on the hills between Eagle Rock, Cypress Park and Atwater Village, and for most of its history it has been residential and industrial rather than social. It has no high street. What it has is a scatter of businesses along Eagle Rock Boulevard, San Fernando Road and Verdugo Road, and among them a small number of bars that have made outdoor space, not cocktails, the local drinking format.

It is the single most-used answer to the question this article asks, and it explains the local drinking style: you sit outside, you drink beer, you eat whatever truck is parked there, and you stay for several hours because there is room to.
That format works particularly well for watching something. Outdoor screens, a large space, and a crowd that is not there for a scene make it a much better setting for a match than a small cocktail room where four people are trying to see one television.
How to plan around a game
Two practical points. First, check the schedule rather than assuming — patio bars here do not screen everything, and a specific fixture is worth confirming. Second, arrive with a margin: the patios fill for anything significant, and unlike a stadium there is no allocated seat. Thirty minutes before kick-off is comfortable; five minutes before is standing.
For anything involving the Dodgers, factor in that Dodger Stadium is close and traffic on the surrounding roads changes character entirely on a game night — which is either an argument for staying local and watching it here, or an argument for leaving very early.

Up the hill, the residential streets climb steeply and the views east over the Verdugo Mountains are genuinely good at sunset.
For daytime, the Rio de Los Angeles State Park at the south-west end has open space, playing fields and river-adjacent trails, and it is one of the largest pieces of accessible green in this part of the city.
Getting there
This is a driving neighbourhood. The 2 freeway runs along its eastern edge and the 5 along the south-west, which makes it quick to reach from Glendale, downtown and the eastside. Street parking is generally straightforward, including near the patios, which is a real advantage over Silver Lake or Highland Park on a weekend evening. Metro bus routes run along Eagle Rock Boulevard and San Fernando Road, but service is not the reason anyone comes here.
