Broken Shaker is the bar that made Mid-Beach worth crossing the island for, and it is also the most common wasted journey in Miami Beach. The reason is simple and badly documented: it is closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Three nights out of seven, the courtyard is dark and the aggregator listing that told you otherwise is wrong.
A bar that only opens four nights a week is the easiest wasted journey in Miami Beach, and the happy hour window is only two hours long on top of that. Ask Karpo whether the courtyard is open tonight before you get in the car.
The four nights it is open
Thursday runs 5pm to midnight. Friday and Saturday run 5pm to 1am. Sunday runs 5pm to 11pm. That is the whole week, and everything else is closed.
The kitchen keeps slightly shorter hours than the bar — full menu until 11:45pm Thursday through Saturday and until 10:45pm on Sunday. If eating is part of the plan, that is the deadline that matters rather than the bar's closing time.
Sunday closing at eleven is worth flagging separately, because a Sunday evening here reads like it should run late and does not. Arriving at ten on a Sunday gives you one drink.
The happy hour, and what it actually is
Happy hour runs daily from 5pm to 7pm — daily meaning on each of the four nights the bar opens — with discounted drinks and food at both the indoor bar and the poolside area. It is branded La Piscina, and the arrangement is that you order at the bar and drink by the pool.
Two hours is short and the window opens the moment the doors do, so five o'clock is the correct arrival rather than a keen one. Turning up at half past six gets you thirty minutes of it.
This is also the only time of day when the courtyard is genuinely relaxed. From about eight onwards on a Friday it is full and loud, and the version of this bar that people describe in glowing terms — a garden, a small pool, low chairs, a drink made properly — is the five-to-seven version.
What to drink
The bar built its reputation on tropical drinks made with real technique: fresh juice, house syrups, herbs grown on site rather than a bottled sour mix. The programme has been recognised nationally more than once and the standard has held.
Order something long and cold rather than something spirit-forward. This is an outdoor bar in a subtropical climate and the drinks are designed for that; a stirred, boozy cocktail in a courtyard in August is fighting the weather.
If there is a punch or a large-format option on the list, that is the value order for a group during happy hour and the thing the bar is best set up to make quickly.
Where it is, and why that matters
2727 Indian Creek Drive, in the courtyard of the Freehand Miami, in Mid-Beach. That is north of South Beach and south of the big Collins Avenue resorts, in a stretch that has very little else going on at night.
The consequence is that this is a destination rather than a stop on a crawl. You will arrive by car or rideshare, and there is not a great deal within walking distance afterwards. Plan it as the evening or as the first half of one that ends in South Beach.
Parking in Mid-Beach is metered street parking and hotel valet, and neither is fun on a Saturday. A rideshare both ways is the low-friction answer and it also removes the question of who is driving.
It sits inside a hostel-hotel, which is part of the character rather than a caveat: the crowd is a genuine mix of travellers and locals in a city where a lot of bars are one or the other.
The other thing worth knowing about the courtyard is that it is genuinely a garden rather than a patio with plants in it. Herbs and citrus are grown on site and used behind the bar, which is why the drinks taste of something specific rather than of a syrup, and it is also why the space feels cooler than an open terrace at the same hour.
That matters for where you sit. The tables under the heaviest planting on the far side of the pool are several degrees more comfortable in September than the ones nearest the bar, and they are the first to be taken once the room fills.
How to plan the night around it
The strongest version is a Thursday or Sunday at five. You get the happy hour, the courtyard at its best, the light going down through the palms, and you are out by seven-thirty with the evening still ahead of you.
Friday and Saturday at five also works but the room changes character quickly after seven, so decide in advance whether you came for the garden or for the crowd. They are different bars in the same courtyard.
If you find yourself in Mid-Beach on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, the honest answer is to go south. There is no version of this plan that works on those nights and the surrounding blocks will not rescue it.
