September is the month Miami golf moves indoors, and it is not really a matter of preference. The average high sits around 88°F, the heat index runs closer to 95°F once humidity is factored in, and there is measurable rain on about seventeen days of the month. A four-hour round starting at ten in the morning is a genuinely hard afternoon, and a four-hour round starting at two has a decent chance of ending early under a lightning hold. This is the one stretch of the year when a simulator bay is not a consolation prize — it is the version of the game that reliably finishes.
Bay pricing in this city swings by more than thirty dollars an hour depending on the day and the time you walk in, and the cheap windows are not the obvious ones. What a September afternoon actually does to a round
Miami's rainy season runs through October, and the September pattern is specific rather than general: mornings are usually playable, heat builds through midday, and convection storms form inland and drift across in the afternoon. Total rainfall for the month is around 178mm, but it does not arrive evenly. It arrives in the two hours you were planning to play the back nine.
The knock-on effect is lightning. Courses in South Florida clear the property on the horn and do not restart quickly, and a delay that would be an inconvenience in October is a finished round in September because the light goes earlier than people expect. If you are committed to being outside this month, the honest answer is a first tee time or a twilight one, and nothing in between.
The maths of a bay versus a tee time
The Tips Golf, at 115 SW 8th Street in Brickell, is the clearest example of how the pricing actually works. Five Trackman iO bays, a full bar and kitchen with drinks served at the bay, and more than 560 playable courses. Off-peak is $65 an hour — weekdays before 4pm and weekends before 1pm — and peak is $90. A bay holds up to six people, and that number is the whole argument: at four players on a two-hour off-peak booking you are at roughly $33 a head, with air conditioning and a kitchen.
Compare that to actually playing. Miami Beach Golf Club drops to around $120 in the summer rate specifically because the heat suppresses demand. Crandon on Key Biscayne runs twilight from 3pm, in the region of $90 with a cart at weekends. Normandy Shores sits at $113 for a regular summer round and $84 at twilight. None of those is unreasonable, and all of them come with the weather risk attached. The simulator is not cheaper than golf. It is cheaper than golf for a group, and it is the only version with a guaranteed finish time.
A bay replaces the range, not the course
The distinction matters if you are booking for a reason other than a night out. What a Trackman bay gives you is numbers on every strike — carry, launch, spin, face angle — which is exactly what a bucket of balls into a net at a public range does not. Two hours of that with feedback after each shot is worth more to a swing than a full round where you hit fourteen drivers and remember none of them.
What it does not replicate is the part of golf that actually punishes you: lies, wind, walking, and the twenty minutes between shots that give you time to think yourself out of a score. Nobody has ever improved their short game on a screen. Treat September as the month you rebuild the swing indoors and October as the month you take it outside.
What is opening, and one distinction worth getting right
The largest change to this market arrives at The Plaza Coral Gables, where Five Iron Golf is opening a roughly 30,000-square-foot venue — its biggest US location to date — with twelve Trackman simulators and twelve full-length bowling lanes under the same roof, plus a tour-level instruction programme run in partnership with the Jim McLean Golf School. It is positioned as a nightlife venue that happens to have golf in it rather than a golf facility with a bar attached, and it is scheduled for spring 2026.
The distinction worth getting right before you book anything: Puttshack at Brickell City Centre, 701 South Miami Avenue, is not a simulator venue. It is three nine-hole mini golf courses using tracked balls that score themselves, open 11am to midnight Sunday through Wednesday and until 1am Thursday through Saturday. It is a very good night out and a poor substitute if what you wanted was to hit a driver. People book the wrong one constantly.
How to book a September night that works
Off-peak windows are the entire game. A weekday booking that starts before 4pm or a weekend booking that starts before 1pm is a third cheaper than the same bay at eight in the evening, and September afternoons are when you want to be indoors anyway. Book the bay rather than the person: six people on one bay is a different economic proposition to two, and the bay costs the same either way.
Two hours is the right unit for a group. One hour is enough for solo practice with data but not enough to finish eighteen holes with four people, and groups that book an hour reliably end up asking for an extension at the point when the venue has already promised the bay to someone else. Walk-ins are possible when bays are free, but on a rained-out Saturday in September they are not free.
