New York is the only city in the league with two teams that share a stadium, a state line problem, and almost no overlap in temperament. In Week 1 of the 2026 season they also share a date and nothing else: the Jets play at Tennessee at one in the afternoon on Sunday, September 13, and the Giants host Dallas that night at 8:20 on NBC. Nine hours apart, two different kinds of evening, two different maps.

The Jets get the afternoon, and the afternoon is crowded
A one o'clock road game puts the Jets in the busiest window of the football week. Eight games kick off simultaneously, which means any generalist sports bar in Manhattan is showing all eight and giving the sound to whichever draws the biggest room. In a city with this much transplant population, that is frequently not the Jets.
So the Jets question is really a question about dedicated rooms. Jets support in New York skews toward Long Island, the outer boroughs and northern New Jersey, and the bars that function as genuine Jets rooms in Manhattan are a small and specific set — typically older, typically not on the avenues with the most foot traffic, and typically known through the supporters' network rather than through search. The distinguishing feature is not screen count. It is whether the room groans together.
The Giants get prime time, which changes everything
Sunday Night Football against Dallas is the single largest watch-party event of the city's opening weekend. It is a home game, it is the rivalry, and it is at 8:20 at night — an hour when the entire city is out anyway. That combination does two things. It fills the Giants rooms early, and it makes almost every other bar in New York a viable option, because on a Sunday night in September there is only one game on.
The practical upshot is that the Giants game is easy to watch and hard to watch well. Any bar will have it. Getting into a room with actual Giants support, on a Cowboys week, without a reservation, is a different proposition — those places fill by seven. There is also a substantial Cowboys population in New York, larger than most locals expect, with its own established bars. On this particular night that is a feature, not a problem, as long as you have chosen deliberately.
How the loyalty map actually runs
The useful way to think about New York football bars is by origin story rather than by neighbourhood. There are three types. The inherited neighbourhood bar, usually an old Irish room in Midtown East, the Upper East Side, Sunnyside, Bay Ridge or Woodside, which has been the local football bar since before anyone marketed the concept. The adopted transplant bar, where a diaspora fan club formally claimed a venue and shows up in numbers. And the generalist, which is excellent for the early window and neutral by design.
For the Jets at one o'clock, you want an inherited room or a supporters' room. For the Giants at 8:20, an inherited room if you can get in, and a generalist if you cannot — the whole city will be watching the same game, so even a neutral bar will have atmosphere.
The other thing that separates New York from most football cities is the subway, which makes a multi-bar day genuinely feasible. You can watch the one o'clock in Woodside and the night game in the East Village without thinking about it, which is not true in Los Angeles or Miami. It also means the bar you choose does not have to be the bar nearest you, and on an opening Sunday that is worth exploiting — the difference between a neutral room and the right room is twenty minutes on a train.
A workable plan for the day
The realistic shape of September 13 in New York is: the early window at one, a long gap, and then the main event at night. The middle window at 4:25 has four games and none of them local, which makes it the best time of the day to eat properly rather than at a bar. If you are trying to do both New York teams in one day, treat them as two separate outings with a dinner in between, not as a single eight-hour sitting. Reserve for the night game. Walk in for the afternoon one, but walk in early.
