Almost every "best ice cream in San Francisco" list treats gelato as a flavour of ice cream. It is not. Gelato is churned slower, holds far less air, carries less butterfat and is served warmer and softer than American-style ice cream, which is why a good scoop of it tastes more intensely of the thing it is made from and melts faster in your hand. The distinction matters here more than in most cities, because San Francisco's most-loved scoop shops and its actual gelaterie are different businesses serving different products, and the roundups blend them into one ranking. In 2026 the city also acquired a genuine claim in the Italian category — one that, strangely, none of those roundups mention.
Tell Karpo which neighborhood you are in and whether you want gelato or a proper scoop, and it will confirm which shops are open right now, which addresses have moved, and how late each counter actually serves.
San Francisco Is Now Sixth in the World, on Paper
The Gelato Festival World Ranking 2026 placed Savannah G. Lee of Savannah's Gelato Kitchen, San Francisco, in sixth place globally, with 206 points and three crowns, on the strength of a reinterpretation of American apple pie. She is the only United States name in that year's top ten, in a list otherwise dominated by Spain, Italy, Poland, Belgium and the Netherlands. That is a real, verifiable competitive result from the ranking's organisers — and it comes with a caveat you should hear before you go looking. We could not find a publicly listed San Francisco storefront address for Savannah's Gelato Kitchen; the operation surfaces through its own social channels rather than a street address in any directory. Treat this one as a maker to follow rather than a door to turn up at, and check their own channels before making the trip.
GIO Gelati, 1998 Union Street
If you want Italian-method gelato from a walk-in counter, GIO Gelati on Union Street in Cow Hollow is the straightforward answer. The name stands for Gelato Italiano Originale, and every flavour is made in-house rather than shipped in as base. The rotating board runs past thirty varieties and mixes the expected — pistachio, salted caramel, mango, passion fruit — with genuinely local inventions like Portuguese milk with caramelised figs, avocado, orange blossom and sour cherry crunch, plus a real dairy-free section rather than one token sorbet. Hours are the useful part: 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. That 10:30 a.m. open is unusual in this category and makes it one of the few places in the city where gelato is a mid-morning option, not just a post-dinner one. There is a second GIO location out in San Ramon, so check which one your map app has pinned.

Lush Gelato, 520 Columbus Avenue — and the Listings That Are Wrong
Lush Gelato's San Francisco shop is at 520 Columbus Avenue in North Beach, open noon to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Sunday, and noon to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Two things about that address will confuse you if you search it. First, Lush also ran a shop at 1817 Polk Street, and that listing is now marked closed — if a saved pin or an old blog post sends you to Polk Gulch for gelato, it is a dead address. Second, 520 Columbus Avenue itself has history: the Gelateria Naia listing at the same address is marked closed, as is Naia's former Castro Street shop at 451 Castro. Naia's remaining directory presence points to Hercules, in the East Bay, not San Francisco. So a search for "Naia gelato San Francisco" will hand you two closed storefronts and one address that now belongs to somebody else.
The American Side: Swensen's and Mitchell's
Neither of these is gelato, and both are better than most gelato. Swensen's has been scooping at 1999 Hyde Street, on the corner of Hyde and Union in Russian Hill, since 1948 — the same corner, the same hand-made style, with a cable car line running past the door. It opens at noon and runs to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and is closed Mondays, which is the detail that ruins Monday-night plans. Mitchell's, at 688 San Jose Avenue, was opened in June 1953 by brothers Larry and Jack Mitchell and is the reason the Filipino flavour vocabulary is standard in this city: ube, buko young coconut, macapuno, alongside banana and cantaloupe. Mitchell's is also the practical late-night answer on this entire list — it runs 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week, which is an hour later than anything else here and the only counter open when a Monday craving hits.
Two Addresses That Moved
Marco Polo Italian Ice Cream is the classic case. It opened in 1982 at 1447 Taraval Street and spent four decades as the Sunset's Italian-Asian hybrid scoop shop. The Taraval location closed in October 2023 and another business took the space; Marco Polo reopened on 19 July 2024 at 3886 Noriega Street in the Outer Sunset. Plenty of guides, maps and reviews still carry the Taraval address. The other one to correct: the Smitten shop in Hayes Valley has closed, and the site now operates as a second location of Hometown Creamery. If your route was built around either of those pins, rebuild it. As a rule of thumb for spotting the real thing, look for gelato stored in covered steel pozzetti wells or mounded in shallow pans rather than piled in tall sculpted towers — the towers are usually a sign of stabilisers and air, not craft.

Ask Karpo first
Scoop shops are among the most volatile small businesses in the city and among the worst-maintained entries in any directory. They move a few blocks and keep the old phone number, they close one branch and leave the listing live, they shorten hours seasonally without updating anything, and one closed Monday can undo a whole evening. Four of the addresses in this guide are wrong somewhere on the internet right now. Before you walk or drive across town for a cone, ask Karpo. It confirms the current address, whether the counter is open today, and how late it is actually serving.
