Food Near Me in NYC: Superiority Burger on Avenue A

Karpo is a proactive AI assistant that lives in the Karpo APP. Just ask where to have dinner, what's worth seeing this weekend, or which vintage shop to check out — like you would a friend with good taste.

The East Village has more places to eat per block than almost anywhere in Manhattan, which makes “food near me” a nearly useless search there — the results are dense, undifferentiated and mostly fine. Superiority Burger is the one worth pinning, and not only because of the burger. It is a useful anchor for reading the whole Avenue A stretch.

This block changes faster than any listing keeps up with. What is worth walking to on a Tuesday is not what is worth walking to on a Saturday.

What the room is now

Superiority Burger is at 119 Avenue A, between St Marks Place and East 7th Street. It moved there on 1 April 2023, taking over the shell of Odessa — the Ukrainian diner that had occupied the corner for decades. The bones are still diner: long counter, booths, tile. The kitchen behind it is not.

Brooks Headley started the project as a tiny takeaway window and it is now a full restaurant with a bar. It is proudly lacto-ovo vegetarian, with vegan options marked, and it is in the Michelin Guide — a combination that tells you the ambition is real even though the room reads casual.

The signature is still the burger: a dense, savoury patty on a soft roll with pickles and shredded lettuce, built to be eaten in four bites and not to imitate beef. Around it, the menu rotates hard — gem lettuce salads, vegetable sides that change with what arrives, and a gelato and sorbet programme that reflects Headley's previous life as a pastry chef at Del Posto.

The hours are the whole trick

This is where most people get it wrong. The schedule is not uniform and it is not intuitive. Monday it opens at noon and runs to 9.30pm. Tuesday and Wednesday it does not open until 5pm, closing at 10.30pm. Thursday it is back to a noon start, until 10.30pm. Friday runs noon to 11.30pm, Saturday 11am to 11.30pm, and Sunday 11am to 9.30pm.

In practice: if you want lunch here, you have Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon the door is shut and the “open now” filter will have lied to you. It takes some reservations but functions largely as a walk-in room, and the counter is the easiest seat to get on your own.

Reading the block around it

Avenue A between Houston and 14th is the spine of the neighbourhood, and Superiority Burger sits roughly at its midpoint. Tompkins Square Park is directly across the avenue — public, free, open until midnight, and the correct place to sit if you have picked up something to carry.

One block west, St Marks Place runs toward Third Avenue and turns into the loud, cheap, late version of the neighbourhood: Japanese counters, karaoke, doorways that stay open past 2am. One block east, the numbered streets between A and B go quiet fast — this is where the neighbourhood's residential character actually lives, and where the smaller bars are.

The practical read: use Avenue A for eating, the numbered side streets for drinking after, and St Marks only if you want volume. Superiority Burger sits exactly on the hinge between the first two.

How to use it on a given night

Solo, on a weekday: walk in, sit at the counter, order the burger and whatever vegetable side is written up that day. That is a twenty-five minute meal and the best version of the room.

With a group on a weekend: expect to wait, and expect the wait to be worth more if you have somewhere to stand. Tompkins Square is across the street and the block has enough doorways to make a thirty-minute delay painless. Do not treat it as a fast option on a Saturday night — the room is small and the turnover is not built for speed.

What to order if you are not ordering the burger

The burger is the name on the door and it is not always the best thing on the table. Because the menu rotates with what the kitchen has, the sleeper orders are the vegetable dishes written up that day — braised, charred or raw depending on the season, and usually the plates where the actual cooking ambition shows.

The gelato and sorbet programme deserves ordering into. Brooks Headley was a pastry chef before this, and the frozen desserts are made in-house with the same rotating logic as the savoury side. Ordering two scoops of whatever is on that day, to share, is a better use of ten dollars than a second savoury plate.

For vegans, the menu marks its options rather than burying them, which makes this one of the more genuinely usable rooms in the East Village for a mixed group. The one thing to check on arrival is the day's board — a dish somebody recommended three weeks ago may simply not exist any more, and that is by design.
