Search fast food near me at one in the morning on the Lower East Side and the map lights up with places that shut two hours ago. The neighbourhood's reputation for never closing is roughly half true: a handful of counters genuinely run to four or five in the morning, and almost everything else stops well before midnight on a Tuesday. The difference between a good late night here and a forty-minute walk to a locked door is knowing which is which, and on what day.
Closing times on this stretch move by day of the week, not by neighbourhood reputation. Ask Karpo what is still serving within a few blocks of you right now and it will filter out everything that has already pulled the shutter.
The 5:30am Outlier on Ludlow Street
Tacos Morelos parks at 100 Ludlow Street and runs later than any room in the neighbourhood. On Friday and Saturday it serves until 5:30am, which is past the point where the question stops being dinner and starts being breakfast. Thursday it goes to 3am, Sunday to 2am.
The trap is the rest of the week. Monday through Wednesday it closes at 1am, and if your mental model is that the truck is always there, midweek is exactly where that model breaks. It is the single most useful hours pattern to memorise on the Lower East Side, because everything else in this guide is calibrated against it: if the truck is shut, the night is genuinely over.
Two Slice Windows, Two Different Closing Times
Jonny's Pizza at 173 Orchard Street runs to 3:30am on Friday and Saturday, with a plain slice at $4.50 and a thin, light bake that holds up better than most things sold at that hour. It is the default when the bars on Orchard and Ludlow empty out and everyone reaches the same conclusion at the same moment.
Scarr's Pizza is four minutes further down at 35 Orchard Street, and it works to a different clock: 11:30am to 11pm Sunday through Wednesday, to midnight on Thursday, and to 2am on Friday and Saturday. That 2am close matters, because it means Scarr's is a pre-last-call decision, not a post-last-call one. Get there before two and it is the better pizza; arrive at half past and Jonny's is the only door still open on the street.
One address correction that still catches people: Scarr's moved from 22 Orchard Street to the larger space at 35 Orchard in June 2023. The old number is still in circulation on plenty of listings and in a lot of saved pins.
The 4am Noodle Room on Eldridge
Eldridge Street Store at 111 Eldridge Street is a tiny, entirely orange room that brought late-night noodles back to this pocket of the neighbourhood. It runs to 4am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, serving spicy peanut butter noodles at around $8, duck lo mein and duck noodle soup, alongside shrimp egg rolls, fried plantains and a bubble tea programme with eight different bubbles and jellies plus fresh fruit purées.
Two things determine whether it works for you. Food service does not start until 5pm, so it is a night-only proposition and never a late lunch. And the sourcing is genuinely local in a way that is easy to miss: the noodles are made fresh on Canal Street each morning, and the fruit and vegetables come from street vendors in the surrounding blocks. It is also small enough that a group of six is a real imposition — go in twos and threes.
Katz's Is a Weekend-Only Answer
Katz's Delicatessen at 205 East Houston Street has been there since 1888, and it is the one place on this list where the after-midnight window belongs to the weekend and only the weekend. Midweek the kitchen stops around 11pm; across Saturday and into Sunday it effectively runs around the clock. Do not walk over on a Wednesday night on the strength of the deli's reputation — check the day you are going.
The ordering system is the part first-timers get wrong. You are handed a printed, numbered ticket on the way in, and every station — sandwiches, hot dogs, drinks — adds to that ticket as you move along the counter rather than billing you separately. Lose it and there is a $50 surcharge, which exists specifically to stop people walking out with it. Keep it in a hand, not a pocket, and tip the carver at the sandwich station.
One correction before you search
Older Lower East Side late-night guides send people to The Meatball Shop at 84 Stanton Street, usually citing its 4am Friday and Saturday close. That location is out of business. It was, for years, the neighbourhood's default sit-down answer after 2am, and its absence is the main reason the current late-night map skews so heavily towards counters, windows and a truck. If a listicle you are reading still has it, the rest of that list is probably from the same vintage.
How to Read the Night
Work backwards from the hour you will actually be hungry. Before 2am on a Friday or Saturday, Scarr's is the best food on this list and the only one where sitting down is realistic. Between 2am and 3:30am, it narrows to Jonny's on Orchard and, on Thursday through Saturday, Eldridge Street Store for noodles. After 3:30am there is one answer, and it is the truck on Ludlow. Midweek, everything above collapses — Tacos Morelos closes at 1am Monday to Wednesday, Eldridge Street Store does not run late outside Thursday to Saturday, and Katz's shuts around 11pm. A Tuesday at 2am on the Lower East Side is a much emptier neighbourhood than its reputation suggests.
