North Beach has a reputation as the place in San Francisco where you can eat late, and the reputation is about fifteen years out of date. The neighbourhood's food map now has a hard ceiling at two in the morning, most of it stops well before that, and several of the institutions people name when they recommend it now close at nine on a weeknight. If your plan involves eating in North Beach after midnight, it is worth knowing exactly which doors are still open before you walk up the hill to find out.
North Beach's late-night reputation belongs to Broadway now, and most of the neighbourhood shuts hours earlier. Ask Karpo what is still serving here at the hour you will actually arrive.
Broadway Is the Whole Answer After Midnight
Sam's Pizza and Burgers at 618 Broadway, between Grant and Stockton, is the anchor and it is the only address in this write-up that reliably runs past one in the morning. Hours are 1pm to midnight Monday to Wednesday, 1pm to 1am Thursday, 2pm to 2am Friday and Saturday, and 1pm to 1am Sunday.
The burger is the thing, and the reason is unglamorous production detail rather than a chef: the meat is ground in house and the sesame buns are delivered daily. That combination at two in the morning is not common anywhere, and it is why this counter has outlived a lot of more fashionable neighbours. The sister operation next door handles ice cream sundaes, which is the correct dessert at that hour and not a serious argument.
Broadway itself is the reason the late window exists at all. It is the neighbourhood's nightlife strip, the clubs run late, and the food economy that survives on this block is the one that serves people leaving them. Walk two streets north into the residential part of North Beach and the picture changes completely.
The Institutions That Are Not Late Any More
Golden Boy Pizza at 542 Green Street is the one that trips people up most often. It is a genuine North Beach institution, it sells thick Sicilian-style focaccia squares, it is takeout only and it takes cash or a physical card with no contactless. Its hours now run 11:30am to 9pm Monday to Thursday and Sunday, and 11:30am to 11pm on Friday and Saturday.
Nine in the evening on a Tuesday is not a late-night business. On a Friday it runs to eleven and still functions as the between-venues stop it has always been, but the version of Golden Boy that people describe from a decade ago no longer exists on a weeknight. If someone recommends it as your 1am plan, they are working from memory.

The Ten O'Clock Tier
Between nine and eleven the neighbourhood still has genuine options, and they are all on Stockton and Columbus rather than Broadway. Tony's Pizza Napoletana at 1570 Stockton Street runs noon to 10pm Monday to Thursday and noon to 11pm Friday to Sunday, cooking across seven different ovens, with a separate slice counter alongside.
Flour and Water runs its Pizzeria at 532 Columbus Avenue and its Pizza Shop counter at 1533 Stockton Street, both 11:30am to 10pm daily, with the counter selling whole pies and the Big Slice, an oversized square slice of the day. That is a clean 10pm ceiling seven days a week, which is useful precisely because it does not change at the weekend: whatever night it is, you have until ten.
There is also a long-running Vietnamese room on Broadway that is reported to stay open until 2am six days a week, which would put it in the same tier as Sam's. Reports of its hours are inconsistent enough that it is worth a phone call rather than a walk if it is the plan rather than the backup.
If It Is Past Two, Leave the Neighbourhood
This is the part most North Beach guides will not tell you. After roughly two in the morning there is no food here, and the nearest reliable option is not in Chinatown or downtown, it is west. Marina Pizza and Pasta at 2139 Lombard Street runs 11am to 3am on Friday and Saturday and sells by the slice.
Three in the morning in the Marina is a strange thing to be able to say about San Francisco, and it is genuinely the latest slice in this half of the city at the weekend. It is a short ride from North Beach rather than a walk. Midweek it closes at midnight, so the 3am option only exists Friday and Saturday, which is when you are most likely to need it anyway.
Three Habits for Eating Late in This City
First, check the day rather than the listing. San Francisco hours contracted sharply after 2020 and a lot of aggregator pages still carry pre-2020 closing times. The gap is frequently two or three hours, and it is always in the direction that ruins your evening.
Second, assume the kitchen stops before the room does, and ask about the kitchen specifically. Third, and specific to North Beach: bring a card and some cash. Golden Boy takes a physical card or cash but not contactless, and it is not the only counter up here that has not moved on from that. Standing at a takeout window at eleven with only a phone is an avoidable way to go home hungry.

Ask Karpo first
North Beach closing times have moved a lot in the last few years and most listings have not caught up. Ask Karpo what is still serving in North Beach right now, whether the kitchen or only the room is open, and where to go west if everything here has already stopped.
