Exposition Park is a single campus south of downtown Los Angeles that contains, within a few minutes' walk of each other, the Natural History Museum, the California Science Center, the California African American Museum, a seven-acre rose garden, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and BMO Stadium. Almost nowhere else in the county puts that much in one place. The consequence for anyone planning a day here is that the neighbourhood has two entirely different modes, and knowing which one you are walking into is the whole game.
A museum day and a match day at Exposition Park are different cities, and they occasionally happen at once. Tell Karpo the date and it will tell you which one you are getting.
The museum half
The California Science Center is the campus's biggest draw and is free to enter for its permanent galleries, including the Space Shuttle Endeavour — a genuine orbiter, displayed indoors, that is one of the most impressive objects on public view anywhere in the city. The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County covers dinosaurs, the region's natural history and the excellent Becoming Los Angeles gallery, and charges admission. The California African American Museum is free and consistently well programmed.
That is one free major museum, one free specialist museum and one paid museum inside a five-minute walk, which makes this the best-value cultural campus in Los Angeles by some distance.
The stadium half
BMO Stadium hosts LAFC, and the Coliseum hosts USC football and large events; both have capacities that transform the surrounding streets. On a match day the park's roads close in places, parking prices multiply, and the walk from the Metro station becomes a moving crowd. That is not a reason to avoid it — an LAFC match with the north-end supporters section in full voice is one of the best live sporting atmospheres in the city — but it is a reason not to plan a quiet museum afternoon on the same date by accident.
The reverse combination works well, though: an early museum visit followed by a match at the same campus is one of the more efficient full days available in Los Angeles, with no driving in between.
The free green part
The Exposition Park Rose Garden sits in a sunken seven-acre bowl between the museums, holds thousands of rose bushes, and is free to walk into. It closes for part of the winter for pruning, which catches people out. On a spring afternoon it is one of the more surprising pieces of public space in the city — formal, quiet, and immediately adjacent to two major stadiums.
The park also holds open lawns and, at the eastern edge, the ongoing development around the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, which will add another major institution to the same campus.
Getting there
Metro's E Line stops at Expo Park/USC on the northern edge, which is the correct way to arrive on any busy day and a perfectly good one on a quiet day. Driving means the park's own lots, which are priced by event, plus surrounding street parking that becomes restricted and enforced on event days. USC's campus is immediately north across Exposition Boulevard, which adds another set of walking options and a lot more people during term time.
