The Outer Sunset is the part of San Francisco that most visitors never reach and most residents secretly want to live in: forty blocks of low houses running down to the ocean, fog most mornings, and a temperature roughly ten degrees colder than the Mission. Andytown started there in 2014 and built its reputation on a drink invented for exactly that weather — the Snowy Plover, which is espresso poured over sparkling water with whipped cream on top, and which sounds wrong until you have one on a grey Sunday.
The Outer Sunset runs on its own weather, and a foggy morning at Andytown is a completely different experience from a rare clear afternoon. Ask Karpo what it is doing out at the ocean end right now.
The Snowy Plover
It is two shots of espresso over sparkling water and ice, sweetened lightly, with a cap of whipped cream on top. Described that way it sounds like a novelty. It is not: the carbonation lifts the espresso's aromatics in a way still water does not, the acidity reads as brighter, and the cream on top means the first mouthful is soft and the last is sharp. It has been copied around the country and the original is still the best version of it.
It is named after the western snowy plover, a small shorebird that nests on the beaches a few blocks away and is protected there — which tells you something about how local the whole operation is trying to be. Order one on your first visit. Order a flat white on your second, because the espresso underneath is genuinely good and worth tasting without the theatre.
The Irish soda bread
The other signature is baked rather than poured. Andytown's founders are a couple, one of them Irish, and the soda bread they make is closer to a dense, slightly sweet scone than to a supermarket loaf — studded with fruit, served in thick wedges, and better than it has any right to be alongside coffee. It is the correct thing to eat here and it is what regulars buy by the loaf on the way out.
The rest of the pastry case is decent and rotates. If you are choosing one thing, choose the soda bread; it is the item the shop actually makes rather than sources.
Which location you want
Andytown has grown from the original Outer Sunset shop into several sites around the city, and they serve the same coffee but offer completely different experiences. The Lawton Street original is the small neighbourhood one and the reason the business exists. The downtown and Mission-adjacent branches are bigger, busier and much easier to reach if you are not already out west.
The honest advice: if you are going out of your way, go to the Outer Sunset, and make it part of a trip to the ocean rather than a destination on its own. If you just want the coffee, take the nearest branch and skip the forty-minute journey. The Snowy Plover is the same drink everywhere.
Building a morning around it
This is the part that makes the trip worth it. Ocean Beach is a few blocks west and runs for miles, and the walk along it is the best long flat walk in San Francisco. Golden Gate Park's western end — the windmills, the bison paddock, the Beach Chalet — is immediately north. The Sunset's commercial strips on Judah and Noriega have a dense run of small restaurants that most of the city never visits.
The N Judah light rail runs from downtown all the way out to the ocean, which makes this one of the easier long trips in the city without a car. Give it forty minutes each way and treat the coffee as the anchor of a half-day rather than a stop.
The weather is not a detail
The Outer Sunset is reliably the foggiest, coldest, windiest part of San Francisco, and in summer it can be genuinely bleak while downtown is in sun. That is not a warning so much as an instruction: bring a layer more than you think, and do not plan on sitting outside. The upside is that fog on Ocean Beach is one of the more atmospheric things the city does, and a hot drink in it is the entire point of the exercise.
Autumn is, counter-intuitively, the clearest and warmest season out here. If you get a clear September afternoon at the ocean end of the city, take it.
Why a coffee shop out here works at all
The Outer Sunset had almost no speciality coffee when Andytown opened, and the conventional wisdom was that it could not support any: too far out, too residential, too cold, not enough passing trade. What the founders bet on instead was that a neighbourhood of forty thousand people with nowhere good to go would come to them, which turned out to be exactly right. The shop became a local institution before it became a citywide one.
That order of events shows in how the place behaves. It is a neighbourhood cafe first — people know each other, dogs are outside, the queue is a mix of surfers, families and people who have walked four blocks. It is not designed around visitors, and the experience is better for it. If you go, go on a weekday when the room is doing what it normally does rather than on a Saturday when half the queue has come across town.
