The Outer Richmond starts somewhere around 20th Avenue and runs west until it stops at the ocean, and its commercial life is arranged along three parallel streets rather than gathered into a centre. Balboa Street, Clement Street and Geary Boulevard each carry their own run of shops, and they behave differently: Geary is fast and wide and mostly for driving, Clement is the eating street, and Balboa is the quiet one where a café can still have a free table at ten on a Saturday.

Three streets, three moods
Balboa is the one to use if you want to sit. It has enough of a commercial run to give you options between roughly 30th and 40th Avenues, without the volume of people that Clement pulls at lunchtime. Clement Street west of about 20th Avenue is the neighbourhood's food spine, dense with bakeries, restaurants and small counters, and the coffee there is generally attached to something else you are also going to eat. Geary is a boulevard rather than a street, which makes it useful for parking and unpleasant for walking.
The mistake people make is treating these as interchangeable and then walking the long blocks between them. They are five to ten minutes apart on foot with residential streets in between, so choose one and stay on it.
The reason to take it away
Three of the best free things in San Francisco are at the end of this neighbourhood, and all of them are improved by arriving with a coffee. Lands End, at the northwest corner, has a coastal trail with views of the Golden Gate and the ruins of the Sutro Baths at its eastern end. Ocean Beach runs the entire western edge. The Legion of Honor sits above it all in Lincoln Park, and the grounds and the view from them cost nothing even if you do not go inside.
The practical route: coffee on Balboa around 36th or 38th Avenue, west to the Great Highway, and either north along the coastal trail towards Sutro Baths or straight down onto the sand. It is roughly a fifteen-minute walk from the shops to the water, and the wind will decide how pleasant it is more than anything else.
What the fog actually does out here
The Outer Richmond is one of the foggiest, coldest and windiest parts of San Francisco, and the difference between it and the Mission on the same afternoon can be ten degrees and a complete change of plan. Locals dress for it and do not treat a grey morning as a cancellation. Two rules that hold: a hot drink is worth more here than almost anywhere else in the city, and a lid matters, because the wind on the Great Highway is not theoretical.
If you are staying inside
On a bad-weather day, the neighbourhood rewards a longer sit. Clement Street's bakeries and the small cafés along Balboa are built for people who are not in a hurry, and the neighbourhood's rhythm is slow enough that nobody will move you on. This is not a district of laptop-hostile counters. If you want to read for two hours, this is one of the easier places in San Francisco to do it.

The three commercial streets are Balboa, Clement and Geary, running roughly between 20th and 45th Avenues. Lands End and the Sutro Baths ruins sit at the northwest corner near Point Lobos Avenue; the Legion of Honor is in Lincoln Park above them, with free grounds and paid galleries. Ocean Beach runs along the Great Highway on the western edge. The 38 Geary runs the length of the neighbourhood from downtown; the 5 Fulton runs along the park's north edge. Expect fog, wind and temperatures noticeably lower than central San Francisco.
