Studying in Miami has an obvious failure mode: you pick a café by its photographs, arrive with a laptop and a charger, and discover there are four seats, no plugs and a ninety-minute limit. Vice City Bean is the local answer to that problem, and the useful part is that it is three different answers depending on which address you choose.
Three rooms, three closing times. The wrong one costs you an afternoon.
The three addresses
The main room is at 1657 North Miami Avenue, open 7am to 6pm daily. There is a Brickell location at 1111 Brickell Avenue, aimed squarely at the financial-district working crowd. And there is a room at the Citadel food hall in Little River at 8200 NE 2nd Avenue, which is closed on Mondays and runs Tuesday to Sunday, 8.30am to 8pm.
That last one is the important variation. An 8pm close is four hours later than the flagship, which makes the Citadel room the only one of the three that supports an evening session. If your work happens after dinner, the other two are irrelevant to you.
Conversely, the 7am open at North Miami Avenue is the earliest of the three and the best option if you are the sort of person who does the real work before 10am.
The infrastructure that matters
Wi-Fi is free and has no password, which sounds trivial and is not — a café that makes you ask for a password at the counter is a café where you cannot sit down until you have queued. Seating runs from communal tables to smaller spots, and there are power outlets in usable numbers rather than token ones. The Brickell room in particular is set up with comfortable seating, fast free Wi-Fi and a good count of outlets.
What that adds up to is a room where a three-hour session is not an imposition. That is rarer in Miami than it should be, and it is the reason this chain shows up on every local list of laptop-friendly cafés.
How to run the day
Pick the room by the shape of your day, not by proximity. A morning-heavy day: North Miami Avenue from 7am, out by noon. A working day that has to fit around meetings in the financial district: Brickell. A day where the useful hours are 4pm to 8pm: the Citadel, and only the Citadel.
Do not plan a Monday at the Citadel. It is closed, the food hall around it operates on its own schedule, and it is a long way to drive to discover that.
The pattern that gets the most out of a long day is to split it across two rooms with a walk or a drive in between. Four hours in one chair is worse than two blocks of two hours with a change of scene, and the three addresses are far enough apart to constitute a genuine break.
Ordering to stay honest
This is a specialty coffee operation and the espresso drinks are the default order, but for a long session the arithmetic favours filter or a large cold brew. Miami's heat makes cold brew the obvious choice for most of the year, and it lasts longer than a cortado, which matters when the alternative is queueing three times.
Re-order roughly every ninety minutes. It is the fair exchange for a table with a plug in a room that is not charging you rent, and it is what keeps cafés willing to tolerate laptops at all.
There is food, which extends the session and removes the need to leave and come back. Eating at the table you are working at is not ideal for concentration, though — the better move is to take a break, eat, and return to the laptop with a cleared head.
The Citadel room, specifically
Working inside a food hall sounds like a bad idea and mostly is not. The Citadel is open from morning until late, with a rooftop bar and a rotating events programme, and the practical consequence for a student is that everything you need for a full day is inside one building: coffee at 8.30am, twelve kitchens for lunch, and somewhere to go at 8pm when the café closes and you are done.
The trade is noise. A food hall at 6pm on a Friday is not a library, and the rooftop programming runs to live DJs at weekends. Headphones are not optional, and a Friday evening is the worst slot of the week to attempt anything requiring concentration.
Tuesday to Thursday, 2pm to 6pm, is the sweet spot: quiet enough to work, late enough to be useful, and with the whole hall available when you stop.
