Historic Filipinotown — HiFi to almost everyone who lives there — occupies the ground between Echo Park, Westlake and the edge of Silver Lake, roughly bounded by the 101 freeway, Beverly Boulevard, Temple Street and Hoover. It has been formally designated since 2002 and it is one of the few central Los Angeles neighbourhoods that has not been turned into a destination strip. There is no promenade here. What that produces, for anyone looking for coffee, is unusually good conditions: rooms with actual space, seats available at eleven on a Saturday, and no one hovering.
This is a neighbourhood where the good rooms are spread out and unmarked rather than lined up, so the difference between a good hour and a wasted drive is knowing which corner to aim at. Tell Karpo what you want to do while you drink it.
The room people come across town for
Bloom & Plume Coffee at 1638 Beverly Boulevard is the address that put HiFi on the coffee map. It came out of a florist's studio and it looks like it — colour-saturated, heavily styled, and deliberately unlike the pale-wood-and-concrete template that most third-wave rooms default to. The drinks are taken seriously and the room is a statement, which means it photographs well and also that it is genuinely pleasant to sit in for an hour.
It sits on a stretch of Beverly that is otherwise low-rise and quiet, so it functions as a destination rather than as part of a strip. Park once, and plan to walk a bit if you want to combine it with anything.
What the neighbourhood is actually made of
Temple Street is HiFi's spine and carries most of its everyday commerce — small markets, bakeries, Filipino restaurants and the long-standing community institutions the district was named for. Beverly Boulevard along the south is faster and wider. Between them is a grid of houses, apartment blocks and the occasional building with a mural on it, and the murals are the thing to look at.
The best known is 'Gintong Kasaysayan, Gintong Pamana' — Eliseo Art Silva's enormous history mural near Beverly and Unipark, painted in 1995 and one of the largest Filipino American murals in the country. Unidad Park sits beside it. If you are drinking coffee in this neighbourhood and do not walk to look at that wall, you have missed the reason the neighbourhood is called what it is called.
Eating alongside it
HiFi's food is Filipino first and it is not arranged for browsing — the good addresses are individual buildings on Temple rather than a row. Bakeries selling pandesal and ensaymada, small counters doing silog plates in the morning, and turo-turo style steam tables where you point at what you want are the neighbourhood's staples. Going in the morning, with coffee, is the correct way to encounter all three.
Getting there and around
HiFi is bounded by the 101 on the east side, which makes it very quick to reach from downtown and Echo Park and slightly confusing to navigate once you are inside, because the freeway cuts the natural grid. Street parking is generally available, which is not something you can say about the neighbourhoods on either side. Metro's 4 and 10 lines run along Santa Monica and Temple respectively, and Echo Park Lake is about a ten-minute walk from the northeast corner.
Choosing
A styled room and a proper drink: Bloom & Plume on Beverly. Coffee attached to breakfast: Temple Street, at a Filipino counter, in the morning. Coffee plus something to look at: buy it on Beverly and walk to the Silva mural at Unidad Park. Coffee plus a walk that leaves the neighbourhood: north-east to Echo Park Lake, which is fifteen minutes on foot.
