Cypress Park is a small neighbourhood in north-east Los Angeles, wedged between the Los Angeles River, the 110 freeway and the slope of Mount Washington. It has never been a destination — no restaurant strip, no gallery row, no promoted identity — and its commercial life amounts to a few blocks around Cypress Avenue and Figueroa Street. What it does have is a set of long-standing morning counters, a state park most Angelenos have never heard of, and a hill behind it.
There are only a handful of counters here and they keep early hours, so a wasted trip is a real possibility. Tell Karpo when you are going and it will confirm what is open.
The morning counters
The format is small and functional: taquerias and family kitchens along Cypress Avenue and Figueroa doing egg tacos, breakfast burritos with potato and chorizo, and coffee that is not the point. Prices are low, the rooms are small, and the trade is almost entirely local — you are likely to be the only person there who is not from within a few blocks.
The related category worth knowing about is the panadería. Northeast Los Angeles has a strong bakery tradition and the pan dulce here is bought by the tray for the week rather than by the piece, which is a better way to buy it if there are two or more of you.
What Cypress Park actually is
This is a neighbourhood of small houses on a grid, with light industry along the river and the hill rising behind. It was a railroad neighbourhood — the Southern Pacific yards ran through here — and the traces are still visible in the street layout and the industrial buildings at the river edge. It is quiet in a way that Highland Park and Echo Park no longer are.
The Los Angeles River runs along the eastern boundary, and this section is part of the ongoing river revitalisation work, with path segments and access points that are steadily improving. It is not the finished riverfront that the plans promise, but it is walkable and it is genuinely interesting to see mid-transformation.
Where to walk it off
Rio de Los Angeles State Park, at the neighbourhood's northern edge, is built on the former Taylor Yard railroad site and combines playing fields, wetland habitat and walking paths on land that was industrial until recently. It is one of the larger pieces of accessible open space in this part of the city and it is free.
Above the neighbourhood, Mount Washington's streets climb steeply to views over downtown and the basin, and the Self-Realization Fellowship's Mount Washington headquarters occupies a 1909 hotel building near the top with gardens open to visitors at set times. The walk up is genuinely steep; the view is genuinely worth it.
Getting there
Metro's L Line stops at Lincoln/Cypress and Heritage Square, both on the neighbourhood's edges, which makes this reachable by rail from downtown and Pasadena. The 81 and 83 buses run along Figueroa. The 110 freeway runs along the western side and the 5 is close to the east. Street parking is straightforward throughout.
Practical notes
The commercial blocks are around Cypress Avenue and Figueroa Street; counters here keep early hours and are small local operations. Panaderías sell pan dulce by the tray.
