Bernal Heights is a hill with a village on the side of it. The village is Cortland Avenue, four or five blocks of shops and restaurants that serve the surrounding houses and almost nobody else, and the hill is Bernal Heights Park — a bald, treeless summit with a 360-degree view that is one of the best free things in San Francisco. The morning here has a natural shape: eat on Cortland, walk up the hill, come back down.

The morning food
Bernal sits directly above the Mission, which means the taqueria tradition arrives here fully formed — breakfast burritos with egg, potato, cheese and your choice of meat, and the smaller morning taco with egg and chorizo or egg and beans. The neighbourhood's counters do both, and the Cortland Avenue bakeries and cafés fill in the pastry-and-coffee end of the same meal.
Two ordering notes. A San Francisco breakfast burrito is a full meal, not a snack, and ordering two tacos instead is the better call if a hill walk is coming. And the salsa is worth asking about — most counters make more than one and will let you taste before committing.
The hill, which is the point
Bernal Heights Park's summit is a short, steep walk up from Cortland — roughly ten to fifteen minutes depending on which street you take. It is grassland rather than woodland, which is why the view is uninterrupted in every direction: downtown, the bay, the Mission grid, Twin Peaks, and on a clear day the whole eastern shoreline. There is a rock outcrop at the top that everybody sits on.
It is also one of the city's great dog-walking hills, so expect company. The paved road around the summit is level once you are up, which makes the top itself accessible even though the approach is not.
The rest of the free part
Bernal's hidden feature is its staircases and garden paths — the neighbourhood has a network of pedestrian steps and unofficial paths threading between the houses, several of them planted and maintained by residents. Esmeralda Slide Park has a concrete slide built into a stepped street, which is a genuinely unusual piece of public infrastructure and free to use if you can fit.
Precita Park at the northern foot of the hill is the flat green space with a playground, and it is the natural end point if you are with children or if the summit is too much.
Getting there
The 24 Divisadero runs along Cortland Avenue, and the 14 and 49 run along Mission Street at the bottom of the hill, with the 24th Street Mission BART station about fifteen minutes' walk north-west. Street parking on Cortland is limited but the residential streets are generally available — though they are steep, narrow and, in a few places, closer to a ramp than a road.
