That makes it the single most dependable address in this entire guide, and the only one that works at 3am, 5am or any other hour you happen to be awake. Worth knowing: this is a three-location business and the other two are not 24-hour. The Baker Street shop at 601 Baker Street runs 6am to 9pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 9pm at weekends, which still beats seven o'clock on weekdays but not on a Saturday. The Mill Valley branch at 252 Almonte Boulevard opens at 6am daily, though that is across the bridge and out of the city. If you specifically need the round-the-clock counter, it has to be Polk Street.
Sightglass, SoMa: 6:30am, and the only serious coffee before seven
Sightglass at 270 7th Street opens at 6:30am Monday through Friday and 7am on Saturday and Sunday. That weekday half-hour is the entire pre-7am specialty coffee scene in this guide — there is no second option at that standard and that hour. The site is the company's production roastery and headquarters as well as a coffee bar, laid out as one open room so you can watch green coffee move through the process, with public cupping sessions on Fridays. Note the weekend shift carefully: on Saturday and Sunday the 6:30 start disappears and it opens at seven like everywhere else, which quietly removes the only reason it was on this list.
Red's Java House opens at seven, not before — and nine at weekends
Red's Java House on Pier 30 turns up on nearly every early-breakfast roundup for San Francisco, and its own site is unambiguous: 7:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday, and 9:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. Seven is not before seven, and the weekend opening is two full hours later than the weekday one — which is the detail that actually ruins plans, because the waterfront is exactly where people schedule a Saturday morning walk. The hours do stretch on Giants home dates, but at the other end of the day: closing moves to 6pm for day games and 8pm for night games. Nothing about a game day makes it open earlier.
Two names to check yourself, and one that has closed
Caffe Trieste at 601 Vallejo Street in North Beach is frequently listed at 6:30am. Its official site publishes the address and phone number but does not publish café opening hours, and third-party listings disagree with each other — some say 6:30am, others 7am. Treat the early opening as unconfirmed and phone ahead before building a morning around it. Donut World has the same problem in a worse form: listings disagree on both the address and whether it still runs 24 hours, with several reports of a midnight close, and there is no official source to settle it. Call first. And Café Abir, still recommended in older guides as a 6am option on Divisadero, is permanently closed — the space has long since turned over to another business. It is a good illustration of why an undated list is worse than no list.
What to actually do before 7am
Build the morning around one of the two confirmed points and treat everything else as a bonus. If you are up genuinely early and want food, Polk Street is the answer at any hour on any day. If you want proper coffee and it is a weekday, SoMa at 6:30 is the answer, and you have half an hour of exclusivity before the rest of the city opens. If it is a weekend, accept that the city effectively starts at seven and plan a 7am opening instead of a 6am one. Above all, check the day of the week before the address: in this category, Saturday and Sunday are a different city, and almost every mistake people make here comes from reading a weekday hour and turning up on a weekend.
