San Francisco has thirty-odd Michelin-starred restaurants and about four hundred rooms that matter more to how the city actually eats. This is a list of the second kind: the institutions, the counters, the family rooms and the late kitchens that have survived earthquakes, booms, busts and a pandemic without ever chasing an accolade. Most take walk-ins. Several have been in the same room for longer than the guide has existed.
Several of these are queue-only, several close between lunch and dinner, and two are cash. Ask Karpo which ones are open right now, how long the line is tonight, and what is good within a block if the wait is longer than you have.
The institutions
Tadich Grill on California Street has been trading since 1849 and claims the title of the oldest restaurant in California. Order the cioppino or anything grilled over mesquite, sit at the counter, and accept that the waiters have seen everything. House of Prime Rib on Van Ness is the other one — a single dish, a silver cart wheeled to the table, martinis, and a booking system that requires planning weeks ahead. Original Joe's in North Beach completes the set: red booths, Italian-American cooking, and a bar that has been the neighborhood's living room for generations.
North Beach, which is more than tourism
Tony's Pizza Napoletana on Washington Square makes something like a dozen styles of pizza properly, which sounds like a gimmick until you eat the Margherita. Golden Boy a few doors down sells square Sicilian slices through a window to a queue that has existed since 1978. Molinari Delicatessen has been slicing salumi on Columbus Avenue since 1896 and will build you a sandwich the size of a forearm. Mama's on Washington Square is the breakfast queue people join at eight in the morning without complaint.
Japantown belongs in this group too. The ramen counters and izakaya inside and around the Japan Center malls serve a community rather than a queue of visitors, and the quality has been consistent for decades. It is also the easiest neighborhood in the city for a group with mixed appetites, because everything is within one covered block.
Chinatown and the late-night tier
Sam Wo has been feeding this neighborhood since 1907, including the stretch when it was famous for the rudest waiter in San Francisco. Yuet Lee is the neon-green late kitchen for salt and pepper squid at eleven at night. Good Mong Kok sells dumplings by the box to a permanent queue on Stockton Street. None of them will ever have a tablecloth and all of them are better than most rooms that do.
The Richmond and the Sunset
The avenues hold the city's deepest bench. Shanghai Dumpling King and the dumpling houses around Geary and Clement do soup dumplings and hand-pulled noodles at prices that have not tracked the rest of the city. Thanh Long out in the Sunset invented the Vietnamese roast crab and garlic noodles that half the Bay Area's restaurants now serve, and it is still the original. Old Mandarin Islamic does northern Chinese hot pot and lamb in a plain room in the fog belt. Turtle Tower's chicken pho is the version to measure others against.
The Mission, the Tenderloin and the Bayview
El Farolito on 24th Street is the burrito that ends arguments, and it is open late. La Palma Mexicatessen a few blocks away has been making tortillas on site since 1953 and is a shop as much as a restaurant. Brenda's French Soul Food in the Tenderloin does New Orleans cooking and beignets to a queue that starts early. The Old Clam House down in the Bayview has been on the same corner since 1861, which makes it older than most of the neighborhoods on this list.
Two more that belong on any honest version of this list. Hog Island's counter in the Ferry Building shucks oysters from its own farm up in Tomales Bay, which is about as short a supply chain as a city restaurant can have. And Red's Java House, the wooden shack on the Embarcadero south of the ferries, sells a double cheeseburger and a beer for less than a cocktail costs three blocks inland, with a view of the bridge that hotels charge for.
What these rooms have in common
They are single-location businesses with an owner on the premises. They do one thing and have done it for decades. They are priced for people who eat there more than once a year. And crucially, they are full of regulars — the surest sign that a room is good is not a critic's review but a table of people who have clearly been coming since before the current staff were hired.
The Bib Gourmand list is the closest thing the guide has to a map of this world, and it is worth reading precisely because it ignores prestige and rewards value. But plenty of the rooms above have never appeared on any list at all, which is not an oversight so much as a different way of existing in a city.
Practical notes
House of Prime Rib requires a reservation well in advance; almost nothing else here does. Several rooms close between lunch and dinner, and the Chinatown counters close early. Cash is still king at a handful of them. Queues are shortest before 6pm and after 8:30pm at every single place on this list. And if you are choosing between one of these and a tasting menu, consider that the tasting menu will be excellent and forgettable, whereas the cioppino at a hundred-and-seventy-year-old counter is a story you will still be telling.
