For about fifteen years the honest answer to where to find the best coffee in San Francisco pointed west and south — to the Mission, the Haight, the Outer Sunset — and pointedly away from downtown, which was chain territory and not worth the walk. That map is now out of date. A wave of Starbucks closures across the Bay Area emptied a run of prime ground-floor corners, and the city's independent roasters have spent the past year moving into them. The best cup in San Francisco is increasingly available in the Financial District, which is not a sentence anyone would have written in 2019.
The catch is that these new downtown rooms keep office hours, not cafe hours, and several of them simply do not open on Saturdays. Tell Karpo which neighbourhood you are in and what day it is, and it will point you at a counter that is actually pouring right now rather than one that shut at five.
The Starbucks vacancies became the city's best new coffee bars
The mechanism here is unglamorous and entirely about real estate. When Starbucks closed a batch of Bay Area stores, it left behind exactly what a specialty roaster wants and can rarely afford: corner units with plumbing, ventilation and heavy foot traffic already in place. Andytown Coffee Roasters, which began in the Outer Sunset, took the space at 66 Kearny Street. Spro Coffee Lab moved into 201 Spear Street. Ritual Coffee Roasters — one of the businesses most responsible for San Francisco's third-wave reputation in the first place — has taken a Financial District room at 295 California Street. Three of the city's most serious coffee names now have downtown addresses they did not have two years ago.
The same period cost the city a landmark in the other direction. Ritual closed its Haight Street cafe at 1300 Haight in April 2025, ending a nine-year run on that block. If you have a mental note that says Ritual equals Haight-Ashbury, update it — that room is gone, and the company's energy has moved to the other side of the city.
The weekend trap nobody warns you about
Here is the detail that will ruin a Saturday morning if you do not know it. Andytown's Kearny Street location runs Monday to Friday, roughly 7am to 5pm, and is closed both Saturday and Sunday. It is built for the office crowd, and when the offices empty so does the schedule. The Fremont Street Andytown is friendlier about it, opening on weekends but on a shortened 9am to 3pm day rather than the weekday 7 to 5. Saint Frank's Russian Hill room at 2340 Polk Street runs seven days, 7am to 6pm, which makes it the more dependable weekend option if you are anywhere near there. Wrecking Ball on Union Street opens at 7am on weekdays but not until 8am on Saturday and Sunday, and closes at 4pm every day — an hour that catches out anyone assuming a late-afternoon coffee is available.
Saint Frank is also worth a correction. Its South Park and Mission Street locations have closed, and both still turn up in older roundups and saved map pins. Polk Street and the Folsom Street room are where the company actually is now.
What to order, and where the original still wins
If you make it out to the Outer Sunset, Andytown's original at 3655 Lawton Street is open seven days, 7am to 5pm, and it is the address for the drink the city has quietly organised itself around. The Snowy Plover is sparkling water and ice, two shots of espresso poured over the top, a measure of brown-sugar syrup, and a heavy spoonful of hand-whipped cream. It reads like a novelty on paper and drinks like the most sensible thing on the menu — the carbonation keeps it sharp where an iced latte would go flat and sweet. It is the single most San Franciscan thing you can order in a coffee shop, and the downtown branches make it too, which is a large part of why the expansion worked.
The broader point for anyone building a coffee route: the city's quality bar is now high enough that neighbourhood no longer predicts the cup. What predicts the cup is opening hours. A genuinely excellent downtown counter that is shut on Sunday is worse than a merely good one that is open, and San Francisco currently has a lot of the former.
It is worth understanding why the hours look the way they do, because it tells you how to plan around them. A downtown cafe in San Francisco now earns almost all of its money between 7am and 10am on weekdays, from people walking to an office. Saturday footfall in the Financial District did not recover the way it did in the neighbourhoods, so a weekend shift there costs more in wages than it brings in — which is why a company like Andytown will happily run seven days in the Outer Sunset and five days on Kearny Street. The practical consequence is that the two halves of the city are now on opposite schedules. Downtown is an early-weekday proposition. The residential neighbourhoods are where the weekend coffee still lives, and that split is likely to hold as long as the office pattern does.
Practical notes
For a weekday morning downtown, Kearny Street, Spear Street and California Street are all within a short walk of each other and all pour seriously good coffee before 9am. For a weekend, ignore downtown almost entirely and go to Polk Street or out to Lawton Street in the Outer Sunset, both of which run seven days. Most of these rooms stop serving between 4pm and 6pm, so San Francisco is not a late-afternoon coffee city no matter what the neighbourhood is. Order the Snowy Plover at any Andytown. And check the day of the week before you commit to a downtown address — the single most common failure here is turning up on a Saturday to a cafe built for Tuesday.
