🧾 What the card is

IDNYC is a government-issued photo ID from New York City, free to apply for through December 31, 2026. Any resident age 10 or older can apply, regardless of immigration status. It grants access to City buildings, serves as a library card across all three NYC library systems, and helps open select bank accounts. Valid 5 years (2 years for applicants under 16).

📋 What to bring: identity and residency

Applicants typically need 3 points of identity and 1 point of NYC residency, including proof of date of birth and a photo. A machine-readable foreign passport covers all 3 identity points alone. Exception: certain valid documents, such as a New York State driver license with current NYC address, satisfy all 4 points by themselves. Use the official IDNYC Document Calculator to check your exact documents before going.

📍 Appointments and designated walk-in days

Most centers require an appointment, released every Friday for the following week. Walk-ins are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis only at designated centers on specific days (subject to center capacity): Staten Island (Mondays), East New York (Tuesdays), Bronx Monterey (Wednesdays), Manhattan Union Square (Thursdays), and Queens Public Library Central (Fridays). Always verify center hours on the official locations page before heading out.

📬 Receiving your card: about 14 business days

Enrollment takes under an hour: staff verify documents, take your photo, and return original papers on the spot. Approved cards are mailed to your NYC address in approximately 14 business days (card delivery times vary, and no street address appears on the card face). Pickup options are available for those without a permanent mailing address.

🎟️ Free memberships across 35+ institutions

Cardholders qualify for free one-year memberships and discounts at over 35 participating cultural institutions. Highlights include the American Museum of Natural History, The Met, MoMA, MoMA PS1, El Museo del Barrio, Museum of the City of New York, BAM, Carnegie Hall, and The Shed. Check the official cultural institutions directory for the full, current roster and specific benefit terms.

⏳ How to claim: separate applications & 5-year rule

Having an IDNYC does not automatically grant museum access: cardholders must apply separately with each institution (typically in person at the box office or visitor desk with their card). Crucial rule: anyone who held a paid membership or redeemed a free membership at that institution in the past 5 years is not eligible. Wildlife Conservation Society (Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, NY Aquarium) uses a unified membership redeemed at designated gates.
