Your Own Pilot Narrates the Orange County Coast From Above

The aircraft seats three and the booking is private, so the pilot is talking to your group alone for the whole forty-five to fifty minutes.

Fly the Orange County coast with your own pilot.

John Wayne Airport has a side most passengers never see. ACI Jet South sits off Campus Drive, away from the passenger terminal, and the aircraft parked on that ramp are small enough to count the seats from the doorway.

This one seats three, and the booking is private, so all three are yours. Forty-five to fifty minutes after you walk out to it, you are back on the same ramp, having watched most of the Orange County coastline go by at window height.

Flights leave from ACI Jet South at John Wayne Airport, off Campus Drive in Santa Ana. Your pilot collects the group from the lobby at the reservation time.

Private Coastal Air Tour from Orange CountyA private 45 to 50 minute flight for up to three passengers along the Orange County coast, with pilot narration, noise-reduction headsets, bottled water, and all fees and taxes included.www.viator.com

What the Pilot Does With the Intercom

Every passenger gets a noise-reduction headset, and the child sizes are part of the standard kit. The headsets are what make the narration work: the pilot is on the intercom with you from takeoff to landing, including the long stretches between landmarks.

The operator sells this as a personalized flight. If you are flying for a birthday, an anniversary, a graduation, or an engagement, they ask you to say so when you book so the pilot can plan around it.

Forty-four of the forty-five ratings this tour has collected are five stars.

South Along the Coast, Nothing Lands

Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point, and San Clemente all pass under the wing. The aircraft stops at none of them, so the whole run reads as one continuous view.

Laguna Beach stacks galleries, coves, and beaches along a few miles of cliff, and the water off Crystal Cove State Park is designated an underwater park. Dana Point puts its marinas and boutiques around the harbour, and the same harbour is where the dolphin and whale-watching boats go out. San Clemente, known for its Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, calls itself the Spanish Village by the Sea.

Inland the route passes Orange County Great Park in Irvine. The park occupies the decommissioned Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, and the reuse is deliberately non-aviation: sports fields, farmland, an amphitheatre, and a waterpark where the runways used to be.

Getting to the Right Side of the Airport

ACI Jet South is at 19711 Campus Drive in Santa Ana. It sits on the general aviation side of John Wayne Airport, a different entrance from the one the airlines use.

Drive up under the shade cover and a valet attendant meets the car. Valet service is complimentary, and there is no instruction to arrive early: the pilot escorts your group out at the reservation time. Inside the building, go left to the lobby and wait there.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are not part of this booking, so plan your own way to Campus Drive.
