Your Carved Jack-o'-Lantern Becomes Park Compost in the East Village
Bring the family's carved pumpkins to La Plaza Cultural and smash them yourself, free, for compost that goes to city parks.
🍂 The Sunday Pile
🎃 What the Smash Is
LES Ecology Center has collected leftover pumpkins here every fall, and the setup is plain. You carry in pumpkins, gourds and finished jack-o'-lanterns, and the pile grows through the afternoon at La Plaza Cultural. The smashed pumpkins are collected for composting for city parks and green spaces, which is the whole reason the garden hosts it. Alongside the compost bins, family activities include Food Scrap Painting, Typewriter Poetry, and light refreshments, with a recipe sheet for any pumpkin still good to cook.
🔨 How the Afternoon Goes
Smashing is the main event and it happens in the open among the garden beds. You set your own pumpkin down and break it apart, and the noise carries out to Avenue C. Children take their turn at the bins, and a Community Drumming Circle joins in from 1:30 to 2:30. Drop-ins are welcome, so nobody is checked off a list at the gate. Light rain does not cancel it, and organizers hold November 15 for severe weather.
🚇 Transit, Timing, and What to Bring
The garden sits at East 9th Street and Avenue C, and it runs from noon to 3 on Sunday, November 8. The 6, F, L and N trains stop nearby, along with the M14A, M14A-SBS, M15-SBS and M9 buses. Registration on the organizer site is suggested rather than required. Carved lanterns and whole pumpkins both go in, so nothing has to look good. If the date does not work, the same group lists food scrap drop-off sites for another day.
