You Zipline In, Then Climb Out Above the Arkansas River

A via ferrata is a cliff with the hard parts already solved. Iron rungs, steel cable, and a few bridges are bolted into the granite, and two carabiners keep you tied to the line the whole way across. AVA's Granite course sits above the Arkansas River valley, and you reach the start of it by zipline.

Zip in, then climb the via ferrata.

The name is Italian and it means iron way. Somebody has been up this cliff already, with a drill, and left you a staircase of steel rungs where the rock gives you nothing.

Two ziplines carry you to the start of the climb. From there you work along and up the granite, hand over hand on rungs and rails, across bridges strung between rock, with the Arkansas River valley opening underneath you. The Sawatch Range stands on one side and the Mosquito Range on the other, and the fourteen-thousand-foot Collegiate Peaks sit at your back.

You do not need to have climbed before. The whole design of a via ferrata is that the route is already protected, so what it asks of you is the nerve to keep moving and the arm strength to pull up a ladder.

AVA books the trip as three hours. The operator's own page is more honest about it: the journey can last up to three and a half hours, and that is the number to plan your afternoon around.

What happens inside that window is a mix. There is traversing, where you sidestep along a cable with the valley below your heels. There is climbing, straight up on rungs. There are bridges. Since 2023 there has also been the Flame Line, a flight line the operator describes as springing from the cliff face into a seventy-eight-foot freefall.

A guide is included, and the rate covers taxes and fees. Gratuities are not included, and there is no hotel pickup, so you are driving yourself to the outpost on US-24.

Two Carabiners, and Only One Ever Comes Off

The safety system is the reason a beginner can do this at all. You wear a harness with two bungee lanyards, each ending in a carabiner, and both clip onto the cable that runs the length of the course.

The carabiners have an internal lock that makes it mechanically impossible to open both at once. When you reach an anchor and need to move past it, you unclip one, move it, then unclip the other. At no point in that sequence are you off the cable.

The course is not uniformly hard. One climber who went through in August 2023 wrote that there are alternate routes for a few obstacles, so those who want to take a slightly easier route have the option to do so, while still having fun. One move you do not like is not the end of your day.

Rain Is Fine. Wind and Lightning Are Not.

AVA is blunt about this in their own FAQ: the via ferrata tours will take place in rain, snow or shine. They run the course wet.

What stops it is high wind or lightning. Those are the two conditions the operator names, and neither of them is negotiable on a cliff strung with steel cable.

So bring a rain layer. Colorado mountain weather turns over fast at this elevation, and a jacket in a small pack is the difference between a wet good day and a wet bad one. A small backpack for water and layers is welcome on the course.

Who the Course Turns Away

Three gates, and they are worth reading before you pay for four people.

  • Age: twelve and up. A responsible adult has to be on the booking.
  • Weight: the operator's FAQ puts the Granite minimum at seventy-five pounds and the maximum at two hundred fifty.
  • Health and fitness: not recommended if you have spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or are pregnant. The listing asks for at least a moderate level of physical fitness, and the operator rates the trip Thrilling and Very Active.

The seventy-five pound minimum is the one that surprises people. The booking page lists forty pounds, but that figure does not match what AVA publishes for this course. Their lighter fifty-pound minimum belongs to their other via ferrata, the one up at Idaho Springs. If you are bringing a small twelve-year-old, weigh them before you drive out.

Wear closed-toe shoes that will stay securely on your feet, and shorts or pants long enough to sit under a harness. Leave scarves and dangling jewelry in the car. Helmet, harness, and gloves are handed to you at the outpost.

What Happens in the Four Hours Before Your Slot

Booking closes four hours ahead of the start time, and confirmation is instant, so a same-day decision works as long as you make it by late morning for an afternoon departure.

Cancel at least twenty-four hours before your departure time and you get a full refund. Inside that window you do not.

The schedule runs three departures in a day. Guiding is in English. One booking holds up to twelve travelers. That is a limit on your reservation. It does not cap how many other people are on the rock with you that hour.

The season at Granite runs May through September, a shorter window than AVA's Idaho Springs course and worth knowing if you are planning this from out of state.

The outpost sits on US-24 outside Buena Vista, with the Collegiate Peaks lined up along the horizon behind it. Most people come off this course talking faster than they went on, and the drive back down the valley is where it settles.
