🗿 Thirteen White Heads, Then New Paint
David Zwirner gives Nara his first solo with the gallery and his first major New York show in nearly a decade, and it takes two Chelsea buildings to hold it.
533 West 19th Street is the sculpture address: thirteen white heads, each modeled first at palm size, then enlarged ten times over, cast in bronze and finished in matte white. A face you could cup in one hand is suddenly monumental.
537 West 20th Street is the painting address: the new 2026 canvases, the large drawings, and the early works from the 1980s that Nara chose himself. The two entrances are about two minutes apart on foot, and that walk from a white giant to a new canvas is the contrast worth planning around.
Free, Tuesday to Saturday, 10 AM to 6 PM, November 5 to December 12. Opening reception Thursday, November 5, 6–8 PM; RSVP on the gallery's site.
