Ybor City After Dark With Ghost-Hunting Gear in Hand

Ybor City empties out once the restaurants close. SpookEasy Tours hands you a meter at 9:00 PM and walks you through the old cigar district for two hours, starting and finishing at its own bar.

Plan a ghost hunt through Ybor City.

Ybor City was built around Vicente Martinez Ybor's cigar factories, and the brick and wrought iron are still standing. By nine at night the restaurant crowd has thinned out and the streetlights are doing most of the work.

SpookEasy Tours runs its walk out of its own bar on North 15th Street. The guide hands out ghost hunting equipment at the start, you keep it for the full two hours, and the route stays inside the historic district.

Departures run Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 9:00 PM. The group can reach 25 people, and other parties are mixed in with yours.

The price covers the guide, the two hours and the equipment. Anything you eat or drink at either bar is ordered and paid for separately. Tickets are mobile only and confirm instantly, and the operator keeps booking open right up to the departure time.

Ghost Investigation Tour: Interactive Paranormal Experience, 18+Two hours through Ybor City with ghost hunting equipment, led by SpookEasy Tours. Thursday to Saturday, 9:00 PM. From USD 35.www.viator.com

The Oldest Blocks, Walked at Night

The operator budgets about 70 minutes for the street portion, and the route covers the historic district on foot. It takes in the original cigar factory, the old baptist church gravesite and the José Martí memorial.

The streets are the original ones, and some of them are still cobblestone. That is the part people underestimate. Two hours is a long time to be standing and walking on uneven brick, and the operator says the tour is not recommended for anyone with poor cardiovascular health.

Shoes matter more than anything else you bring. The route stays within a few blocks of the start, so you are never far from the bar you set off from.

Where the Two Hours Actually Go

The operator splits the night into four pieces:

  • About 70 minutes walking the historic district with the equipment in hand
  • A pass by the José Martí memorial, a tribute to the Cuban independence leader
  • 20 minutes inside Cigar City Cider and Mead, a building the operator says Teddy Roosevelt once walked through
  • 30 minutes back at SpookEasy Lounge, where the walk started

Two of the four stops are indoors, and you can order a drink at either while you keep hunting. The memorial is a pass by, so the time there is short.

What the Equipment Is For

Ghost hunting equipment is included in the price and handed out before you leave the bar. You carry it the whole way, indoors and out.

The honest version is that the gear gives the night its shape. A reading is a cue for the guide to stop and tell you what happened in that room, and the history underneath it is real: a cigar district with a gravesite and a memorial on the route.

Go for Ybor City and the two bars. Anything the meter does on top of that is a bonus.
