Winter Manatees in Virginia Key's Lagoon, Skyline If It's Calm
A guided paddle from Virginia Key into a lagoon where manatees gather each winter, with the skyline only if the wind allows.
PADL operates kayak and paddleboard rentals at Virginia Key, and this guided outing gives you up to two hours on the water with a licensed guide, a paddle lesson and your choice of craft. The listing ties the main draw to a season, with manatees moving into Biscayne Bay between November and April. Outside those months, the operator says the same water still turns up dolphins, spotted eagle rays and great blue herons.

Pick your craft when you book. There are two departures, at 9:30 AM and 2:00 PM, and everyone meets at the paddle rental station inside Virginia Key Beach Park.

November to April is the window the listing names, and many travelers who went in those months describe manatees close enough to drift beside. It is still wildlife. Reviews posted in March 2024, April 2024 and July 2025 report no manatees at all. A March 2026 traveler went out on a cloudy, chilly day and saw only shadows under the surface, and an April 2026 reviewer said poor water clarity kept two manatees blurry. Much of the guide's work is knowing where to wait. Travelers describe sitting still in the lagoon while the animals rose to breathe, and one wrote that the guide put them close enough to settle in and let the manatees show themselves.
Lagoon First, Open Water Only If the Wind Agrees

The listing describes two kinds of water. First comes the mangrove-edged lagoon it calls Lamar Lake, where it places the manatee sightings in season. Then, with currents and wind permitting, the Atlantic shore or a run into Biscayne Bay for the Downtown skyline. That second leg depends on the day, so count the skyline as a bonus. A November 2025 traveler reached the bay view easily on calm water. A December 2024 reviewer instead spent a long stretch paddling into a stiff breeze toward a beach and felt it had little to do with the manatees. Travelers also describe a mangrove tunnel and a stop on a small beach, and one experienced pair wrote that the guides matched the distance to each paddler while others in their group did less.
Board or Kayak, and Who Should Skip It
Each booking picks one craft: a single kayak, a tandem kayak for two, or a stand-up paddleboard with a leash. A paddle lesson and safety briefing come first, and first-timers on both boards and kayaks wrote that it was enough to get them going. The listing asks for at least a moderate level of physical fitness and does not recommend the tour for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or a pregnancy. Every booking needs an adult, and the listing sets no minimum age. Families described children aged 8, 10, 11 and 12 handling their own kayaks, in reviews from April 2024 and April 2026. Service animals are allowed, and guiding is offered in English and Spanish.
What the Booking Covers and What It Leaves Out
The booking covers the kayak or board, paddles, a US Coast Guard approved life jacket and a waterproof bag for your phone, wallet and car keys. Vehicle admission into the park is separate from the booking, and two travelers in early 2026 reported paying 8 dollars to drive in. Guides often take photos along the way, though reviewers in December 2025 and April 2026 had not received theirs when they wrote, so keep your phone in the dry bag and take your own. Bring water and sunscreen, and a March 2026 traveler also warned about mosquitoes. A full refund needs 24 hours' notice, and the listing marks the tour as one that can be cancelled for poor weather.
📍 Enter Virginia Key Beach Park and follow the signs for kayak and paddleboard rentals. The listing says there is adequate parking on site, and the tour finishes back at the same launch. Departures are 9:30 AM and 2:00 PM. Completing the release form on a phone took one traveler extra time right before launch, so arrive with a few minutes to spare. Then the guide pushes off and the search begins.
