Willamette Stone
4.5 (11)park
Open for day use year round
Tucked into the Portland hills, this forest marker is the starting point for every land survey in Oregon and Washington.
Description

Established in 1851 under John B. Preston, the Oregon Territory’s first Surveyor General, the sandstone monument marks the Initial Point of the Willamette Meridian. That single origin governed the rectangular grid used to section all public lands and property descriptions across both states. Preserved within a state heritage site acquired in 1945, a short walk down a forested hill brings visitors directly to the marker to view and touch the baseline.
