Description

Established in 1851 under John B. Preston, the Oregon Territory’s first Surveyor General, the stone designates the Point of Beginning of the Willamette Meridian. The surveying work launched from this spot spurred regional settlement and initiated the transfer of land from government to private ownership. A short walk down a hillside off Skyline Boulevard brings visitors directly to the marker, where the physical monument and historical markers can be inspected up close.
