Wicker Park's Narrow Balcony Room For Rising Bands

Up-and-coming rock and hip-hop acts take a narrow, balcony-wrapped stage at this longtime Wicker Park club on North Avenue.

🎤 The room upstairs

Subterranean is a small, multi-level music club on North Avenue in Wicker Park, long known as an early stage for Chicago rappers and indie bands on the way up. The main room is narrow and tall, with a wraparound balcony that puts the upstairs crowd almost on top of the stage.

Bills change nightly across hip-hop, punk, and rock, and the venue's open-mic sessions have helped launch local careers. The low ceiling and tight floor keep sound and crowd close together, the kind of room where a band and its audience share the same sweat. It sits on the Wicker Park strip near the Damen Blue Line, an easy stop before or after dinner on Milwaukee Avenue.
