Where Songwriters Play In The Round In Green Hills

Four songwriters trade verses in the round inside a hushed Green Hills strip-mall room central to Nashville songwriting.

🎶 Songs in the round

The Bluebird Cafe is a 90-seat listening room tucked into a Green Hills strip mall on Hillsboro Pike, where the songwriters behind country and pop hits perform their own material. Opened in 1982, it shaped the in-the-round format that now defines Nashville writer nights, with four performers seated in the center of the room facing each other.

Shows stay quiet by design, and the staff ask the room to hold conversation while a song plays. A whispered lyric still reaches the back wall. Between numbers a writer might unpack the story behind a familiar chorus, and the room leans in as that hit gets played a few feet from your table. Monday open-mic auditions and Sunday writer's nights fill the calendar.

Seats go fast, and reservations open a week ahead for the early and late sets. The cafe pours coffee, beer, and wine, and clustered tables under a low ceiling keep every performance within arm's reach.
