Las Vegas Motor Speedway is a 1,200-acre racing complex on the northern edge of the city, opened in 1996 and built around a 1.5-mile tri-oval. Grandstands wrap the front stretch, and from the upper rows the track reads as a gray ribbon set against bare desert mountains. The spring NASCAR Cup Series weekend, the Pennzoil 400, draws the largest crowds of the year.
Beyond the main oval, the property runs a quarter-mile NHRA drag strip, a dirt track, and road courses where visitors take laps in stock cars, and the exhaust note carries for miles across the flats, a low roar that arrives before any car appears.
Winter turns the infield roads into Glittering Lights, a drive-through display of more than three million bulbs that you tour from your own car. The speedway sits about 15 miles north of the Strip, a straight run up Las Vegas Boulevard past the last of the neon.
