Where Manhattanhenge Lines Up Down Far West 42nd Street
Twice a year the setting sun aligns straight down West 42nd Street, right where a 1965 slice counter holds the western corner.
🌇 Sunset Straight Down 42nd
A few evenings each year, around late May and again in mid-July, the setting sun drops into perfect alignment with the Manhattan street grid. On those nights 42nd Street turns into one of the city's cleanest crosstown sightlines. Stand on the far western blocks near Twelfth Avenue, face the Hudson, and the whole corridor floods with orange light framed by towers on both sides. Crowds gather mid sidewalk with phones raised, tracking the disc as it slides toward the pavement. The clearest angle sits at the western end, exactly where 42nd Street Pizza and Restaurant has fed the same block for sixty years. Step in for a plain slice or a plate of homemade comfort food, then head back out as the light peaks. The room stays old New York, open until 9 PM every day, rated 4.5 across more than 1,500 visits. It makes a steady anchor for an evening built around the sky.
