West Harlem's Hudson Sunset, Then Ribs Under the Viaduct
Cold air, a free pier at the end of West 125th Street, and dinner one block away. The light drops behind the Jersey cliffs here, not behind a wall of towers, and nothing on the plan needs a ticket.
🗺️ One block, two stops
🌇 The pier at the end of 125th
West 125th Street runs out at Marginal Street, where the pavement becomes a pier. Come about twenty minutes before sunset and take the benches facing the water. The light drops behind the Palisades on the Jersey side, not behind a wall of towers, which is the whole reason to stand here instead of on a downtown rooftop. The clocks go back on November 1, and sunset jumps from 5:53pm to 4:52pm that same evening, then slides toward 4:29pm by the end of the month, so the twenty-minute cushion moves an hour earlier with it. The pier costs nothing and the walk from the 1 train at 125th takes about ten minutes.

🍖 Ribs under the viaduct
One block east, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que sits in the shadow of the Riverside Drive Viaduct, the arches that carry the road over 125th Street. Ribs, platters and a cold beer, with no view needed after the pier. Official hours run Monday to Wednesday 12-9pm, Thursday 12-10pm, Friday and Saturday 12-11pm, Sunday 12-9pm, so settle the timing before you leave the water. Reserve online, or walk in and wait at the bar.

From open water to under the arches
East from the pier the cold stops at the first arch. Two rooms, one street: outdoors, wind coming off open water while the sun drops behind the Jersey cliffs; indoors, dark steel arches overhead, smoke in the air, a rack of ribs and a beer on the table. Nobody in there is looking at a skyline. The two doors are about three minutes apart on foot, though the actual path depends on which Marginal Street entrance you came through, so follow the gate you reach. Leave the car, skip the crosstown bus, and bring a jacket for the bench and a booked table for a weekend night.
