Watch Up to 300,000 Bats Emerge at Sunset
Spot Mexican free-tailed bats at Waugh Bridge, where a free platform puts the sunset flight beside Buffalo Bayou.
🦇 An Evening Exodus
Houston has a sunset show tucked into the crevices beneath Waugh Drive Bridge. Up to 300,000 Mexican free tailed bats live here in Buffalo Bayou Park, turning the crossing at Allen Parkway into a place to pause when daylight starts to fade.
The viewing platform sits on the southeast bank, level with the water and a short walk from the Allen Parkway parking pull offs. Watch from there, the sidewalk or the east rail of the bridge. As the colony emerges, the bats drift east along the bayou before scattering over downtown.
You can watch with no ticket and no reservation, keeping this an easy evening plan to leave unbooked. The flight happens around sunset rather than at a fixed clock time. Weather matters here, too. Rainy evenings and sunset temperatures near 50 degrees or below usually keep the colony inside the bridge. Choose your evening with that in mind before heading down to the water.
