Washington's Monuments After Dark, Ten to Twenty Minutes at Each

Heart of DC Tours runs it in a van after the floodlights come on, parking at each memorial long enough for everyone to get out.

Plan a night tour of Washington's monuments.

The National Mall changes character once the floodlights come on. Marble that reads flat at midday turns sculptural, the daytime crowds thin, and the ground between memorials goes quiet enough to hear the fountains.

Heart of DC Tours works the route in a van and caps the group at twelve. The format is stop-and-walk. The van parks, everyone gets out, and you walk up to the memorial itself.

Departures run after dark and the van returns to the address it left from. Booking closes two hours before the start time, and confirmation comes back instantly.

Where the Van Stops, and for How Long

The order runs Thomas Jefferson Memorial, a drive-by at Ford's Theatre, the White House, the World War II Memorial, the Marine Corps War Memorial, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the west front of the U.S. Capitol.

Ford's Theatre is the one you see from the vehicle. Every other name on that list is a stop with time on the ground. Jefferson, Vietnam and Lincoln get twenty minutes each, and the Capitol gets ten. Added together the nine stops account for 145 of the 180 minutes, and the balance is driving.

One leg leaves the District. The Marine Corps War Memorial stands at 700 George Washington Memorial Parkway, on the Virginia side of the Potomac, and it is the only stop on the route outside Washington.

The Audio Link, and What You Have to Bring

Every booking carries two layers of narration. A local guide talks at the stops, and an audio link covers each site with the longer historical background you can run between them.

The link is included. Earbuds are not, and neither is on-board WiFi. Load the audio before you leave and bring your own headphones. Bottled water and in-vehicle air conditioning come with the ticket. Gratuities do not.

At the Vietnam Veterans Memorial the wall carries over 58,000 names. The Korean War Veterans Memorial sets nineteen stainless steel figures against a granite wall that mirrors them. Both are places where the audio has something to do while you walk the length of the wall.

Meeting the Van

The van parks at One CityCenter, 850 10th St NW, and everyone meets there. There is no hotel pickup on this tour, and the drop-off is the same address as the start. Public transportation runs nearby.

Ford's Theatre stands at 511 Tenth Street NW, on the same street as the meeting point. Tickets are mobile, one per booking, and an adult has to be on the reservation.

Who the Route Suits

The operator posts two fitness notes. Travelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness, and the route is not recommended for anyone with poor cardiovascular health. Nine stops in three hours means climbing in and out of a van nine times, and covering the last stretch to each memorial on foot.

Infants ride on an adult's lap.

The route finishes on the west front of the Capitol with the dome lit, then the van runs back to 10th Street.
